If you live in Africa’s rural Ethiopia or Serra Leone, finding clean water each day is the difference between life and death. Millions of people are affected by droughts, waterborne diseases, or pollution, and women and children walk for hours every day to find drinkable water for their families and their livestock. Water to Thrive, a non-profit organization, has been at work for 15 years, teaming up with organizations like TLU to dig wells so that people in these areas can survive and move toward better lives. The TLU Water to Thrive Student Club has been raising funds for 14 years to support this work, and in that time, has funded nine water wells, each of which serves about five hundred people.
On April 18, the Water to Thrive Student Club will be joining with the TLU Center for Servant Leadership to host its 14th Annual Benefit Dinner and Silent Auction with the goal of raising the $5,000 needed to create another water well. The event will celebrate Ethiopian culture with traditional food and a presentation, as well as a silent auction featuring items donated by local businesses. It will be held at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, located at 416 Dolle Avenue in Seguin, on April 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $20 each at the door. For those who cannot attend but would like to support Water to Thrive’s efforts, or who would like more information, contact Sophie Salgado at smsalgado@tlu.edu.
