If you’ve ever seen The Carol Burnett Show—whether you watched it back when it aired from the late 60s to the late 70s or saw it years later in reruns—you know you’ve been in the presence of seriously good comedy. Decades later, the jokes still hit, proving that truly funny material—like great literature—has a timeless quality to it. It’s not surprising that the show won 25 prime-time Emmy awards during its 11-year run and made Time magazine’s list of the 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.
And now, the very best of all that comic zaniness is coming to Texas Lutheran University, courtesy of the students of the TheatreXpress program, on April 17–19 at The Studio Theatre on campus.
“Carol Burnett was a pioneer in televised sketch comedy, and her company of players became famous for their group chemistry. This show is helping introduce a new generation to The Carol Burnett Show,” said Professor David Legore, chair of the university’s Department of Dramatic Media. “It’s directed and produced by our student organization TheatreXpress, a group that is learning about these classic sketches for the first time. It also includes members of the surrounding community who fondly remember the original show. It’s been fun to see this blending of cohorts as they collaborate across eras.”
