Family Physics Night 2025: The Mysterious World of Quantum Physics

Diamagnetic levitation? Superconductivity? Lasers?! You’ll learn about all of these and more on November 6, when a favorite local tradition returns: Family Physics Night—a hands-on learning experience for budding scientists of all ages!

“The TLU Physics Department loves the opportunity to connect with the community and share the passion we have for understanding the natural and technological world around us,” said Dr. Calvin Berggren, associate professor and Physics Department chair. “The event is also very beneficial for students and increases their own excitement, understanding, and confidence in the subject of physics.”

This year’s event, The Mysterious World of Quantum Physics, takes a deep—and very fun—dive into one of the most fascinating and mind-boggling branches of science. The theme is right on target, since 2025 happens to be the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, celebrating 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics in 1925.

The United Nations established the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology to help raise awareness of the importance and impact of quantum science and applications on all aspects of life. Berggren said the TLU Physics Department looks forward to sharing the wonder of quantum physics and connecting it to the numerous impacts that this science has had on products and technologies all around us.

“People can look forward to an exciting demo show starting at 6:30 as well as interactive stations about quantum physics, lasers, superconductivity, and MRI,” Berggren said. “Attendees will also have the opportunity to play games demonstrating principles from quantum physics.”

This year’s event, which is free and open to all, will take place on Thursday, November 6 from 6:30–8:30 p.m. in TLU’s Student Activity Center at Jackson Park, across from Bulldog Stadium. Kids from elementary school on up—as well as adults—are sure to have a blast!
