A Star on the Rise: TLU Alum Verne Lundquist ’62 is Back for Happy Gilmore 2

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost thirty years since the first Happy Gilmore movie was released—and yet, the sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, which came out this July, was a phenomenal success, proving that fans didn’t mind the wait for the second installment.

Of course, we at TLU know the real reason the movies have been such a hit: the cameo appearances of one of our most famous alums, Verne Lundquist ’62!

The movie, which tells the story of Happy returning to golf to support his five children, is full of celebrity cameos alongside Lundquist, including famous golfers like Scottie Scheffler, Jack Nicklaus, Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, and Brooks Koepka, to name only a few.

According to Netflix—the exclusive distributor of Happy Gilmore 2—the film, in only the first three days of its release, amassed 46.7 million views. That makes it Adam Sandler’s best opening ever, and also the biggest US opening weekend for any Netflix film.

In the sequel, legendary sportscaster Lundquist reprises his role as himself—a golf announcer—as in the first film. Catch Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix.
