SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran freshman defensive end Chris Kyle tied the American Southwest Conference single-game record for sacks with four Saturday in TLU’s 36-23 loss to McMurry.

Kyle (McAllen/McAllen) had a total of five tackles on Saturday, and all five went for losses (totaling 36 yards). The ASC-record four sacks were four of Kyle’s five defensive stops against McMurry. The four sacks alone resulted in 33 yards in losses.

Kyle, who also had two quarterback hurries, achieved the single-game sack mark that only two others had reached in the 14-year history of the league.

Hardin-Simmons defensive end Reggie Robinson did it twice, and East Texas Baptist defensive end Chad Glover did it once. Both players tallied their single-game sack marks during the 2004 season.

The four sacks by Kyle also set a new TLU NCAA Division III-era single-game sacks record. TLU’s era of NCAA Division III football began in 1998.

Kyle now leads the ASC in sacks with seven for 61 yards in losses. He is second in the league in tackles for loss (with 11.5 for 69 yards in losses).

Texas Lutheran continues its ASC schedule this Saturday with a contest in Abilene against Hardin-Simmons University. Game time at HSU’s Shelton Stadium is set for 2 p.m.

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE
FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
(Games of October 24, 2009)

CO-OFFENSIVE
Marcus Franklin, WR, Jr., McMurry

McMurry junior wide receiver Marcus Franklin (Richardson, TX / Abilene Christian) caught eight passes for 149 yards and had an ASC-record four touchdown receptions in a 36-23 road victory over Texas Lutheran. Franklin’s total of TD catches had only been achieved twice in the 14-year history of the league. Todd Bloom of Hardin-Simmons did it in 1996 and Jarrett Dickers of Sul Ross State did it in 2007. Only four players in NCAA Division III have had that many in a game this season. Franklin scored twice in each half – one was the first of the game and another broke open a 24-17 game in the fourth quarter. His TDs were from 12, 20, 37 and 48 yards out.

Zach Hubbard, QB, Jr., Howard Payne
Howard Payne junior quarterback Zach Hubbard (Shepherd, TX / SHS) set a new ASC record by totaling 608 yards of total offense in a heart-breaking 51-45 loss to Louisiana College. Hubbard was 38 of 63 for 532 yards and five touchdowns passing, while also rushing for 77 yards and a score on 13 carries. His offensive yardage total breaks the old record set by former HPU signal caller Adam King (512 passing, 83 rushing) in the 2004 season. Hubbard’s total is also the highest in NCAA Division III this season and the second-highest among any NCAA level. His passing yardage was just one shy of tying the ASC record.

DEFENSIVE
Chris Kyle, DE, Fr., Texas Lutheran

Texas Lutheran freshman defensive end Chris Kyle (McAllen, TX / McAllen HS) had five tackles – all for losses that totaled 36 yards – and an ASC-record four sacks. Hardin-Simmons’ Reggie Robinson did it twice and East Texas Baptist’s Chad Glover did it once – all in the 2004 season.
