KERRVILLE, Texas – The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team fought off a second-half surge by the Schreiner Mountaineers and posted a 91-71 win Tuesday at Schreiner’s Edington Center.
TLU improved to 5-12 overall and to 3-10 in the American Southwest Conference West Division.
Schreiner fell to 0-17 overall and to 0-13 in the ASC West.
The Bulldogs scored a season-best 91 points by making 34 field goals on 70 attempts (48.6 percent). TLU drained 10 of its 26 three-point attempts.
TLU opened a 25-point lead late in the first half and led by 21, 53-32, at the break.
Schreiner opened the second half with an 18-4 run and quickly cut the TLU lead down to seven, at 57-50.
The TLU lead would shrink down to six at three other times, but Schreiner never moved any closer.
The Bulldogs finally broke away from Schreiner with a 12-2 run over a three-minute span. Kimberly Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) capped the run by nailing a three-pointer from the right corner. The shot put the Bulldogs up by 16 with 7:04 to play.
Hagan hit five three-pointers and scored 15 points off the Bulldog bench. She was 5-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) led the Bulldogs with 17 points and seven rebounds. Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) added 15 points, six assists and two rebounds.
Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) and Pearl Kafoa (Keller/Keller Central) each scored 10 and combined for nine rebounds and five steals.
The Bulldogs made six of their first 12 three-point shots and shot 55 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes.
Hannah Burleson and Monica Enriquez scored 19 and 17 points, respectively, for the Mountaineers. Xandria White added 14 points and nine rebounds.
TLU hosts Sul Ross State on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.
