SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 79-71 home victory Saturday over Concordia Texas.
TLU led by as many as 16 in the second half before Concordia roared back to tie the game. The Bulldogs led 51-35 at the 15:47 mark of the second half and by 13, at 58-45, with 11:16 remaining.
The Tornados put together a 19-6 run over four minutes to tie the game at 64 on a Joel McDonald three-pointer at the 7:46 mark.
TLU never relinquished the lead and quickly went back in front by four on a jumper by Nate Walton (Houston/Westside) and a lay-up by Jonathan Hutton (Austin/Lake Travis).
After Brad Walker’s lay-up brought Concordia back within two with 4:28 to play, TLU scored on its next three offensive possessions to lead by eight. Josh Scott (The Woodlands/The Woodlands) nailed a short jumper, and Malcolm Dotson (LaMarque/LaMarque) and Isaac Williams (San Antonio/Wagner) each scored on lay-ups.
TLU made enough free throws and the necessary defensive stops down the stretch to get the American Southwest Conference victory.
The Bulldogs improved to 3-12 overall and to 3-9 in the ASC West Division. The third win for TLU matched the three wins from all of last season.
Concordia Texas dropped to 6-10 overall and to 5-7 in the ASC West.
TLU put five players in double figures. Hutton came off the bench to score 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. He was also 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
Scott contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Brad Howard (Houston/Cypress Creek) and Williams each added 12 points. Williams grabbed a career-best nine rebounds and recorded two assists. Walton scored 10 and dished out a team-best four assists.
Concordia received 20 points and nine rebounds from Walker. Walker made eight of his nine field goal attempts.
The Tornados’ Neil Welch came off the bench to hit five three-pointers and score 15 points. All 15 points for Welch came in the second half.
