SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran’s frantic rally from 10 down late in the second half came up short Saturday in a 77-75 conference loss to Concordia Texas.
Pearl Kafoa’s potential game-winning three-pointer from the right corner looked good when it left her hands, but the shot bounced off the rim with one second remaining. The horn sounded as the Bulldogs battled for the rebound.
The Bulldogs had the ball for the final 12 seconds in the game and went for the win. TLU swung the ball around the perimeter and found Kafoa, a freshman from Keller (Keller Central), open in the corner.
The win for Concordia Texas moved the Tornados to 7-7 overall and to 7-4 in the American Southwest Conference West Division.
TLU dropped to 4-12 overall and to 2-10 in the ASC West.
TLU trailed by seven, 42-35, at the half and by 10, 75-65, with 3:33 to play.
The Bulldogs closed the game with a 10-2 run. Madilyn Caran (Yorktown/Yorktown) and Jennifer Munoz (San Antonio/Brackenridge) sandwiched jumpers around a Kafoa three to cut the Tornados’ led to three, 75-72, with 1:46 remaining.
After two Concordia free throws, TLU’s Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) brought the Bulldogs within two (77-75) with a three-point play. Timpson was fouled, made the lay-up, and then knocked down the free throw.
The Bulldogs made a defensive stand on the next Concordia possession as Timpson cleared the defensive rebound with 12 seconds to play.
Concordia received 28 points from guard Kassandra Bills, who made 11 of her 15 field goal attempts. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. Bills had 20 points in the first half.
Katie Shaffstall, with 10, and Jackie Eddins, with 11, were the only other Tornados in double figures.
TLU was led in scoring by Munoz’s 13. She also grabbed five rebounds. First-year point guard Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) posted 10 points, four assists and four rebounds.
Kafoa scored nine points and added four rebounds.
TLU’s Kimberly Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek) recorded eight points, six rebounds and three assists. Point guard Jocelyn Langford (Omaha, Neb./San Antonio Clark) contributed nine points, five assists and three rebounds.
TLU put up 38 three-pointers but made just eight. Overall from the field, the Bulldogs made 38.4 percent of its shots.
Concordia made 47.2 percent of its shots in the first half an d 41.9 percent in the second half to finish at 44.8.
