BELTON, Texas – Landie Thompson and Jenny Black combined for 36 points and helped the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders hold off a Texas Lutheran challenge in a 91-77 conference win at the Mayborn Center.
UMHB improved to 9-6 overall and to 8-3 in the ASC West Division.
TLU dropped its fifth consecutive game. The Bulldogs fell to 4-11 overall and to 2-9 in the ASC West.
TLU led by 10 early in the game but fell behind by nine at the half. The Bulldogs rallied from down 13 in the second half to close within three, at 58-55, with a personal 9-0 run by freshman shooting guard Kimberly Hagan (Houston/Cypress Creek).
Hagan was fouled on a three-point attempt and nailed all three free throws. She then hit back-to-back threes to make it a one possession game.
UMHB pushed the lead back to 13 with a 10-0 run. Black connected on a three-pointer and then scored and was fouled to complete a three-point play.
TLU put together one final run in cutting the UMHB lead to four with 4:35 remaining in regulation. Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) scored on a lay-up to cut the UMHB lead down to 71-67.
After two free throws from Landie Thompson, Hagan hit a short-range jumper to bring the Bulldogs back within four, at 73-69.
UMHB extended its lead on the next possession with a right-corner three from reserve Stacie Urbina. The shot was Urbina’s lone three-pointer of the evening.
TLU point guard Amy Doyle made a three-pointer at the 1:05 mark as the UMHB lead shrunk to six, but the Bulldogs could close no further.
The Bulldogs were forced to foul down the stretch, and UMHB made the most of the attempts to the free throw line by extending the lead to 14 at the buzzer.
