Phlebotomy Technician program

SEGUIN – Do you know what a phlebotomist is? The phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team whose main function is to obtain patients’ blood specimens by venipuncture and micro-collection. The field of phlebotomy has greatly expanded in the past several years, and the role of this integral member of the health care team has recently been brought into much sharper focus. Texas Lutheran University’s Center for Professional Development, in partnership with Condensed Curriculum International, is offering a new 11-week, 90-hour phlebotomy technician program to prepare students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care fields.

Students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely.  Classroom work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and clinical training in skills and techniques to perform puncture methods.   The program includes lab exercises, live blood draws, work with a training arm, and other exercises intended to prepare students to function as an entry level phlebotomy technician.

Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6-9:30 p.m., and three Saturdays 9 a.m.-3 p.m., March 31-June 11, 2008. The cost of $1599.00 includes the tuition, books, and all materials. You must document that you have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) to enroll.

The training is in partnership with Condensed Curriculum International, Inc. (CCI).  TLU is offering the course in response to the growing demand for health care staff and professionals.

Learn to make effective presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint 2007™

SEGUIN – Are you looking for an easy and effective way to make presentations in person or online? If so, then you can learn Microsoft PowerPoint 2007™ through Texas Lutheran University.

In the new online course, "Introduction to PowerPoint 2007™," instructor Kathy Van Pelt teaches students how to create impressive, professional-looking slide presentations.

"Of all the Microsoft Office 2007™ applications, PowerPoint is the easiest to learn," says Van Pelt. "It's fun to use, and in the six weeks that my new course runs, students will learn virtually everything there is to know about the program. They’ll become comfortable using PowerPoint 2007™'s retooled interface, which is dramatically different from previous versions of PowerPoint. And they’ll get hands-on experience planning, creating, and saving presentations that incorporate exciting features such as audio, special visual effects, and animation."

The course includes a classroom that is open day and night. Students can interact with the instructor and their fellow students in Web-based discussion areas, where they can ask as many course-related questions as they'd like. A response is usually promised within one business day, and often arrives much sooner than that.

Students can take "Introduction to PowerPoint 2007™" from the convenience of their home or office, and at any time of the day or night. The cost of the course is $99.

For more information about this course — part of a growing catalog of more than 300 instructor-facilitated online courses — contact the Center for Professional Development at 830-372-8047 or cpd@tlu.edu. Visit the Web site at www.tlu.edu/cpd.
