SEGUIN – Registration is now underway for the new Pharmacy Technician Program at Texas Lutheran University’s Professional Development Center. Classes will begin Oct. 22.
The 50-hour Pharmacy Technician Program will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s (PTCB) exam. Pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of registered pharmacists in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies, and other health care settings.
Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, billing, and reimbursement. Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings (6-9:30 p.m.) from Oct. 22-Dec. 12. The $999 fee includes texts and materials.
The Pharmacy Technician Program joins TLU’s Dental Assisting Program as the two new health care professional training programs offered by the Center for Professional Development in partnership with Condensed Curriculum International, Inc. (CCI).
“The demand for health care staff and professionals is growing and has created job opportunities for individuals trained in leading health care fields. These exciting programs will prepare adults for jobs as dental assistants and pharmacy technicians,” said Dr. Rosemary Dawson, director of the Texas Lutheran University Center for Professional Development.
The 100-hour Dental Assisting Program will prepare students to take the State of Texas Registered Dental Assistant (RDT) Exam. The Dental Assisting classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning Oct. 9.
