Christmas Vespers 2015

In preparation for the Christmas season, Texas Lutheran hosts its annual Christmas Vespers service. This celebration of music and word honors the integral role music has played in Texas Lutheran's curriculum and religious and cultural history. Audiences take advantage of the opportunity to hear the ethereal voices of the TLU choirs each year at both the Seguin and Austin Vespers services.

Christmas Vespers will be held in TLU's Jackson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5; and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Tickets for each Vespers service are free but required.

Titled “A Winter’s Night,” this year's Vespers service of word and music will feature the TLU Choir, TLU Women’s Choir, Kantorei Chamber Choir and the TLU Symphonic Winds and Percussion. The service will focus on our journey through life; sometimes our path in this life is celebratory and, at times, it’s quiet and thoughtful. San Antonio actress, Sam Carter Gilliam, will perform short monologues between the musical numbers which lend context to the musical idea of “journey.”

Two commissioned choral works will be performed at this year’s Vespers. One of the works is for choir, marimba and djembe entitled “New Born King,” composed by San Antonio native Alice Gomez whose works incorporate wonderful elements of world music. The second work is by William Averitt entitled “The Manger Haikus” from a song cycle for choir and piano 4-hands called Where Dreams Fly. The original poetry is by Dr. Robert Bode, the Director of Choral Activities at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. The entire song cycle will be premiered during the 2016 TLU Spring Choir Tour.

If you are interested in attending the Vespers service in Austin at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, it will take place on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. This Vespers service is free and no tickets are required.

Ticket Reservation 

All Vespers services at TLU are free and open to the public, but tickets are required due to limited seating.

Tickets are not required for the Vespers service in Austin at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sunday, December 13 at 4 p.m.

There will be reserved seating for TLU’s President’s Associates at the Saturday performance. For more information call 830-372-8030 or visit

Online Ticket Reservation

Our new online ticket reservation system allows you to make a freewill offering at the same time as reserving your tickets. This donation is not a payment for the tickets, but rather an online option to the freewill offering collected at each service. If you choose not to make a donation online while reserving your tickets, you will still have the opportunity to do so at the service as you have in past years. There is no obligation to make a donation and your ticket reservation will be processed regardless.

If you have already reserved tickets, orders placed prior to 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 23 will be mailed to you. All other tickets can be picked up at will call prior to the performance in Jackson Auditorium lobby.
