Christmas Vespers 2015

December 4 2015 - December 6 2015 7:30pm - 9:00pm   |   Location: Jackson Auditorium

Christmas Vespers 2015

In preparation for the Christmas season, Texas Lutheran hosts its annual Christmas Vespers service. This celebration of music and word honors the integral role music has played in Texas Lutheran's curriculum and religious and cultural history. Audiences take advantage of the opportunity to hear the ethereal voices of the TLU choirs each year at both the Seguin and Austin Vespers services.

Christmas Vespers 2015

Christmas Vespers will be held in TLU's Jackson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5; and 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Tickets for each Vespers service are free but required.

Titled “A Winter’s Night,” this year's Vespers service of word and music will feature the TLU Choir, TLU Women’s Choir, Kantorei Chamber Choir and the TLU Symphonic Winds and Percussion. The service will focus on our journey through life; sometimes our path in this life is celebratory and, at times, it’s quiet and thoughtful. San Antonio actress, Sam Carter Gilliam, will perform short monologues between the musical numbers which lend context to the musical idea of “journey.”

Two commissioned choral works will be performed at this year’s Vespers. One of the works is for choir, marimba and djembe entitled “New Born King,” composed by San Antonio native Alice Gomez whose works incorporate wonderful elements of world music. The second work is by William Averitt entitled “The Manger Haikus” from a song cycle for choir and piano 4-hands called Where Dreams Fly. The original poetry is by Dr. Robert Bode, the Director of Choral Activities at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. The entire song cycle will be premiered during the 2016 TLU Spring Choir Tour.

If you are interested in attending the Vespers service in Austin at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, it will take place on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. This Vespers service is free and no tickets are required.
