Audition Instructions

Audition materials should showcase you at your best within contrasting styles. Please tell us the title and composer for each piece you perform.

Vocal and Choral Audition: Two contrasting, memorized pieces that demonstrate your musical strengths – one selection in a foreign language and one selection in English. It is recommended that at least one piece represent repertoire appropriate for All-State and/or UIL. In addition to performing your prepared repertoire, we may also ask you to sing scales and vocalizes.

Strings Audition: Two contrasting selections, one slow and lyrical and one faster and more technical, and a memorized two octave scale, ascending and descending. All-state audition material, etudes, or appropriate solo material are encouraged.

Winds Audition: Two contrasting selections, one slow and lyrical and one faster and more technical, and a memorized chromatic scale, ascending and descending. All-state audition material, etudes, and appropriate solo material are encouraged.

Percussion Audition: Two selections, one on either timpani or snare, and one on marimba (4-mallet encouraged). All-state audition material, etudes, and appropriate solo material are encouraged.

Piano Audition: Two selections of contrasting style and time period. Memorization is encouraged but not required. In addition to performing your prepared repertoire, you may be asked to play scales or arpeggios.

Music Awards & Renewal Criteria

Jones Fine Arts Audition Award

The Jones Fine Arts Audition Award provides artistic recognition for outstanding musical and dramatic media performance to those students who intend to pursue a baccalaureate degree in music, music education, or dramatic media. The amount of this scholarship, up to $7,500 per year, is based on an audition and is required for entry into the School of Music.

A student must demonstrate sufficient proficiency on an instrument or voice. Incoming freshmen, transfer, and returning TLU students are eligible. Music students will audition for, and participate in, ensembles appropriate to their principal instrument (organ, piano, strings, voice, or winds). The amount of this award varies and is determined by the appropriate department faculty.

This scholarship is in addition to any academic scholarships you have received based on academic performance in high school.

Performance Awards

Performance Awards provide artistic recognition for outstanding musical and dramatic media performance to those students who are majoring in a field other than music, music education, or dramatic media. Incoming freshmen, transfer students and returning TLU students who demonstrate superior musical ability in their area of performance or in dramatic media are eligible, regardless of whether or not they are a music or theatre major. The amount of this award, up to $3,000 per year, is based on an audition and can be combined with your TLU academic scholarship. An audition is required.

Performance Awards are given in the following areas:

  • Band Participation
  • Choir Participation
  • Strings Participation
  • Dramatic Media Participation
