About Our Music Awards & Renewal Criteria

Jones Fine Arts Audition Award

The Jones Fine Arts Audition Award provides artistic recognition for outstanding musical and dramatic media performance to those students who intend to pursue a baccalaureate degree in music, music education, or dramatic media. This scholarship is based on an audition and is required for entry into the School of Music.

A student must demonstrate sufficient proficiency on an instrument or voice. Incoming freshmen, transfer, and returning TLU students are eligible. Music students will audition for, and participate in, ensembles appropriate to their principal instrument (organ, piano, strings, voice, or winds). The amount of this award varies and is determined by the appropriate department faculty. Students should review the audition criteria (included in Video Audition Instructions, Part 2: The Audition) and submit a music scholarship audition application.

This scholarship is in addition to any academic scholarships you have received based on academic performance in high school.

Participation Requirements

  • Music scholarship awardees must perform in ensembles as assigned each semester. For awardees in the music major or minor, this requirement continues even where performance requirements for degree completion have been fulfilled.
  • Attend all rehearsals and performances unless excused in advance by the director.
  • Be prepared musically for all rehearsals and performances.
  • Represent the university and the organization in a manner befitting the character of the institution and organization.
  • Enroll in private instruction and labs as required by the instructor.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress standards.
  • Demonstrate leadership within the school and organization.

Criteria for Renewal

Recipients must continue to pursue the designated participation, list music or music education as their a major, maintain a 2.0 CGPA, and meet all participation requirements. The scholarship is renewable for up to an additional three years.

Performance Awards

Performance Awards provide artistic recognition for outstanding musical and dramatic media performance to those students who are majoring in a field other than music, music education, or dramatic media. Incoming freshmen, transfer students and returning TLU students who demonstrate superior musical ability in their area of performance or in dramatic media are eligible, regardless of whether or not they are a music or theatre major. The amount of this award, up to $3,000, is based on an audition and can be combined with your TLU academic scholarship. An audition is required.

Performance Awards are given in the following areas:

  • Band Participation
  • Choir Participation
  • Strings Participation
