SEGUIN – Xavier Garza, humorist, canvas artist, and poet, will present the final event of Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in Langner Hall 120. The event is free and open to the public.
A prolific artist and author, McAllen native Garza received his BFA at UT Edinburg in 1994, and a master’s degree from UTSA in 2007.
He has exhibited his art works in various venues throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, including: the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio, The Arizona State Museum in Tucson, The Mesa Southwest Museum in Tempe, The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, and the Ice House Cultural Center in Dallas.
His work was featured prominently in the books Contemporary Chicano/a Art: Artists, Works, Culture and Education, Chicano Art for our Millennium, Triumph of our Communities – Twenty Years of Mexican American Art, Yo Soy/I am DVD Volume 2 and There Was a Woman – La Llorona from Folklore to Popular Culture.
He is the author of five books, Creepy Creatures and other Cucuys, Lucha Libre: The Man in the Silver Mask, Juan and the Chupacabras, Charro Claus and the Tejas Kid and Zulema and the Witch Owl. Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Xavier Garza has made San Antonio his home since August of 2000.
