Texas Lutheran University senior chemistry major Megan Smith took runner-up honors for a poster she presented at the annual conference of the American Chemical Society last month.

Dr. John T. Masterson, Texas Lutheran University provost and executive vice president, will present the commencement address at Texas Lutheran’s spring commencement ceremonies, at 7 p.m., Saturday on the Chapel Lawn on campus.  Masterson has announced plans to retire from TLU, effective May 31.

Texas Lutheran senior outfielder Casey Salinas was named Tuesday to the American Southwest Conference West Division First Team for the second time in her career after a division-only vote by each division’s softball coaches.

Texas Lutheran center fielder Kyle Harvey (Houston/Houston Christian) was named Monday to the American Southwest Conference West Division Second Team for baseball following a division-only vote by each division’s head coaches. Harvey was joined on the ASC All-West Division squad by eight teammates selected to the ASC West Honorable Mention Team.

Texas Lutheran women’s track and field standout Jessica Raglon and men’s golfer A.J. Vesey were honored Sunday afternoon as the 2007-08 TLU Female and Male Athletes of the Year, respectively. Sportsmanship awards went to women's tennis player Alanna Gangemi and football player Dwight Bonner, and the Walter and Sue Christiansen Awards for academic performance went to Gangemi and football player Matt Alves.

Registration for summer swim lessons at Texas Lutheran University will begin Monday, May 12, 4-7 p.m. at the Mabee Pool on the TLU campus.  Registration will continue in the TLU Fitness Center 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Texas Lutheran University will be offering a Red Cross Lifeguard Training class May 12-17 at the TLU pool.

Texas Lutheran Athletics will honor the accomplishments of its student-athletes from the 2007-08 athletic year in a special TLU Athletics Awards Program at 3 p.m. Sunday in TLU’s Jackson Auditorium. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.

Student-athletes from all 14 TLU sports will be recognized for their accomplishments on the field of play and in the classroom. Student-athletes that have claimed American Southwest Conference Academic All-Conference, All-Conference and All-West Division awards will be honored at the event.

Saturday at Texas Lutheran’s Morck Field, TLU and Schreiner each posted wins in the final regular season doubleheader for both teams. Schreiner took the first game 2-0, and TLU grabbed the finale 4-3 with a three-run rally in the seventh.

The Texas Lutheran men’s golf team could not pull off a third straight American Southwest Conference Championship and placed second Tuesday to Mary Hardin-Baylor at Hurricane Creek Country Club. TLU entered the final round a shot behind UMHB, but the Cru put together the round of the tournament – a 288 – over Tuesday’s final 18 holes and posted a 10-shot win over the Bulldogs. TLU's Ryan Kiel came within eight shots of defending his conference crown. The sophomore fired three consecutive rounds of 74 to tie for second.

The Texas Lutheran women’s golf team recorded a fifth-place team finish after Tuesday’s conclusion of the 2008 American Southwest Conference Women’s Golf Championships at Hurricane Creek Country Club. TLU was led individually by sophomore Angela Aufderhaar (Seguin/Seguin), who placed eighth overall with rounds of 80 and 86. TLU sophomore Carly Hansen was four shots behind Aufderhaar and placed 10th. Aufderhaar and Hansen each earned ASC Second Team All-Conference honors by virtue of their conference tournament finishes. Aufderhaar and Hansen were ASC First Team All-Conference selections in 2007.

Kevin Hensley, Marcella Langford, Britney Norwood, Natasha Sobers, Aida Sopa and Bradley Walker were recently inducted in to the Delta Mu Delta honor society at Texas Lutheran University.

Texas Lutheran University is the eighth college in the nation selected by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) to participate in its “Institutional Diagnostic Service for New Presidents” program. Participation is made possible by a $14,000 grant from CIC.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor secured the American Southwest Conference West Division softball title by finishing off a four-game sweep of Texas Lutheran on Saturday. UMHB won the games Saturday by counts of 2-0 and 6-1. The Cru took all four games from TLU at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.

The Hardin-Simmons Cowboys swept a doubleheader from Texas Lutheran on Saturday to complete a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs and claim a share of the ASC West Division title.

The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs finish out the 2008 season today (Saturday) with an American Southwest Conference doubleheader, set for a 1 p.m. start, against Hardin-Simmons. The 16 students of the Music Theatre class at Texas Lutheran University will present a recital of the music of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt at 7 p.m., April 25 and 28, and a matinee performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27.  The performances, which are free and open to the public, will be in Wupperman Little Theatre in the Schuech Fine Arts Center on the TLU campus. 

The Texas Lutheran University Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Beth Bronk, assistant professor, TLU School of Music, will present their final concert of the season, entitled “Tribute.”

The Texas Lutheran University football coaching staff will host the TLU Legends Varsity Football Camp on June 27-29 for junior high and high school age football players entering grades seven through 12. The camp, led by TLU Head Coach Dennis Parker and his entire coaching staff, will focus on all skills for all football positions. The camp also will feature a kicking skills portion to be led by former Dallas Cowboys punter Toby Gowin.

Pamela Johnston, a novelist from Universal City and associate professor of English studies at Texas Lutheran University, has been awarded a residency at the Ragdale Foundation for the summer session of 2008.  Ragdale is a nonprofit, internationally acclaimed artists' community located thirty miles north of Chicago in Lake Forest, Ill.  This honor is bestowed upon Dr. Johnston in recognition of her outstanding work.  She was also awarded a residency at Ragdale in 2004.

Ann M. Svennungsen, president of Texas Lutheran University, will address the classes of 2008 from Trinity Lutheran Seminary and Bexley Hall Seminary during a joint commencement at 2 p.m., May 24, in Mees Auditorium on the campus of Capital University. President Svennungsen also will receive an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary at that time.

Texas Lutheran outfielder Drew Farr was named the American Southwest Conference Co-Hitter of the Week after slugging a TLU and American Southwest Conference record three home runs in a Saturday win over Schreiner.

Stan Ledbetter, vice president for finance at Texas Lutheran University, was recently accepted to the Thrivent Fellows program, sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Council of College and University Presidents.

The Texas Lutheran women’s track and field team posted national championship provisional qualifying marks Saturday in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays at the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelina Relays.

Three Texas Lutheran University professors who have had books published recently will participate in a book signing on April 22 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Graf Lounge in the Alumni Student Center on the TLU campus. Refreshments will be provided and the event is free and open to the public.

The Delta Alpha Delta sorority at Texas Lutheran University is sponsoring a dinner benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation from 7-9 p.m., April 17, in the Student Activities Center in Jackson Park on the TLU campus. The event is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

Composer Alice Gomez will present a special “talk back” and open rehearsal session at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, in Jackson Auditorium.  The program, presented by the Texas Lutheran University School of Music, Center for Women’s Studies, and Center for Mexican American Studies, is free and open to the public.

Texas Lutheran junior Dante Cage (Corpus Christi, TX / Carroll HS) led the Bulldogs back into contention for an ASC Championships berth with a 4-0 week that included No. 1 singles and doubles wins against West Division opponents Schreiner and Mary Hardin-Baylor. The team win over Schreiner was 5-4. Cage teamed with Nick Schenk in doubles.

The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs lost ground in the race for an American Southwest Conference tournament berth with a doubleheader split Saturday with Schreiner University. In the doubleheader, TLU outfielder Drew Farr homered four times. Farr hit three of his home runs in TLU's game two victory.

Medical billing and coding is one of the fastest growing careers in the health care industry today. The need for professionals who understand how to code health care services and procedures for third party insurance reimbursement is growing substantially. Physician practices, hospitals, pharmacies, long-term care facilities, chiropractic practices, physical therapy practices, and other health care providers all depend on medical billing and coding for insurance carrier reimbursement.

The Center for Professional Development at Texas Lutheran University will offer the last SAT Preparation course for this academic year. The course will begin May 19 in time for students who will take the June 7 examination. The course includes the mathematics, verbal, and test-taking skills needed for success on the test.

The Rev. Ann M. Svennungsen, president of Texas Lutheran University, will preach at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services Sunday, April 13, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brenham.  The church is located at 305 E. Third Street.

The Texas Lutheran men’s golf team posted scores of 292 and 301 over the first two rounds to post a third-place standing Monday in the West Region Invitational.

The Texas Lutheran women’s track and field team posted impressive marks this past weekend at the Rice University Invitational and the University of Texas at Arlington Bobby Lane Invitational. Jessica Raglon broke her own school record in the pole vault and set another in the triple jump. In the pole vault, Raglon cleared 11 feet, 11.75 inches to finish fourth out of 21 competitors.

The Southwestern University women's tennis team registered a 7-2 non-conference win Wednesday over Texas Lutheran. Blair O'Brien and Natalie Gutierrez picked up singles victories for the Bulldogs.

High school students have the opportunity to experience college life and earn college credit at the same time this summer by attending Texas Lutheran University’s Lone Star Scholars Academy (LSSA).

Texas Lutheran and Trinity split a softball doubleheader Tuesday at Trinity University. Trinity won the first game 1-0, and TLU took game two 12-7.

The Texas Lutheran women’s 4x400 meter relay team gave everything it had in defending its 2007 national title but fell just short in repeating the special feat, finishing third Saturday, March 15 at the 2008 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field National Championships.

For their efforts, the four members of the relay team were named ASC Women's Track & Field Athletes of the Week.

Texas Lutheran rallied from a 10-3 deficit in game two Saturday and scored 12 runs in the eighth inning to complete a doubleheader sweep of Howard Payne with a 24-12 victory at TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field.

Susan Evers of San Antonio was recently named presiding officer of the board of Texas Lutheran University Corporation, the governing body that elects the members of the university’s board of regents.

Two new members have been named to the Texas Lutheran University Board of Regents.  Laura Sanford and Lewis Westerman, both of San Antonio, have each been elected to a four-year term on the university’s governing board.

The Texas Lutheran men’s golf team finished second to Mary Hardin-Baylor by eight shots after Tuesday’s final round of the TLU Concan Intercollegiate Classic.

Kristi R. Quiros, dean of Student Life and Learning at Texas Lutheran University, has been elected to the national leadership position of chair of the Small Colleges and Universities Commission of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Texas Lutheran University will present the 2008 Women’s Forum:  “Flourishing in a Competitive World,” 4-6 p.m., Thursday, March 27, in the Dunne Conference Center of Tschoepe Hall on the TLU campus.  The forum is free and open to the public.

Roxanne Long is the new head coach for women’s basketball at Texas Lutheran University, Director of Athletics Bill Miller announced Thursday. Long, 33, comes to TLU from Keller Central High School in Keller, Texas, where she has served as the head varsity coach for girls basketball since 2003.

The TLU women and men's tennis teams dropped non-conference team matches Tuesday to Albion College (Mich.) at TLU's tennis courts. The TLU men's team dropped a 7-2 decision, and the women's team took a 9-0 loss to Albion.

During the recent annual Texas Lutheran University Board of Regents’ Honors Dinner, 25 employees were recognized for their years of service to the university.  The awards were presented by TLU President Ann M. Svennungsen and Board Chair Karen Norman.

The Texas Lutheran-Trinity baseball game, originally scheduled for a 2 p.m. start today (Tuesday) in Seguin, will not be played in Seguin because of wet field conditions at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.

The game will be played tonight, at 7 p.m., at Trinity University in San Antonio.

The Concordia Texas Tornados took full advantage of Texas Lutheran miscues and posted a doubleheader sweep Saturday with 13-4 and 11-8 wins over Texas Lutheran at Keller Faszholz Field. Concordia Texas improved to 12-7 overall and to 2-1 in the American Southwest Conference West Division. Texas Lutheran dropped to 8-10 overall and to 1-2 in the ASC West.

The Texas Lutheran softball team lost to the University of Texas-Tyler and defeated the University of Texas-Dallas on Friday at the ASC First Pitch Softball Tournament in Farmer's Branch, Texas.

At Oran Good Park, TLU dropped a 19-3 decision in five innings to Texas-Tyler in the opening game and defeated Texas-Dallas 14-13 in the late evening contest.

Wedding planners are in demand as more and more sophisticated brides discover they cannot be the bride and the wedding planner on the day of their wedding. Many professional planners run their own companies while many others work for businesses offering wedding planning services.

The Alpha Chi National Honor Society chapter at Texas Lutheran University is sponsoring a Public Service Forum on revamping the U.S. Selective Service System and related topics.  The Forum will begin at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 13, in the Timmerman Room of Hein Dining Hall on the TLU campus.  It is free and open to the public.

The American Southwest Conference First Pitch Softball Tournament in Farmer's Branch, Texas will not start on time Friday due to weather in the North Texas area. Texas Lutheran's first game, against the University of Texas at Tyler, now is set for a 4 p.m. start on Friday. TLU's second game, against the University of Texas at Dallas, is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start, also on Friday.

Check the ASC web site for further announcements about any weather delays and game times.

The Bulldogs also are scheduled to play two games on Saturday - against University of the Ozarks at 10 a.m. and Mississippi College at 2 p.m.

Texas Lutheran University will offer current teachers and prospective teachers already enrolled in an alternative teacher certification program an opportunity to take RED 332, Foundations of Literacy, this spring on five consecutive Saturdays (April 19 - May 17).

The Texas Lutheran University Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble, under the direction of professor Beth Bronk, will present “Blue Shades” this Sunday, March 9 at 4 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium on the TLU campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

Texas Lutheran’s Staci Jackson  won the 400 meter dash and finished second in the 200 as the Bulldogs opened their 2008 outdoor track and field season Saturday with strong performances at the Border Olympics.

The Texas Lutheran men’s golf team placed ninth out of 16 teams at the Callaway Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday with senior A.J. Vesey finishing in a tie for fourth overall.

SEGUIN – Over 200 collegiate honor students from throughout the region will be on the campus of Texas Lutheran University this weekend.  TLU is hosting regional conventions March 6-8 for Alpha Chi National Honor Society and Psi Chi, the national honor society for psychology students.

Cody Miller’s pinch hit solo home run in the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie and helped the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to an 8-5 win Saturday over Louisiana College. Austin Yager picked up the win, and Robert Conley (pictured) notched his second save. TLU took two of three games from Louisiana College.

Texas Lutheran and Louisiana College split a non-divisional doubleheader Friday at Allgood Field. TLU took the afternoon game 8-4, and LC captured the night game 5-2.

At the Tucson Invitational Softball Tournament on Friday, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs dropped a pair of non-conference softball games. TLU lost 6-1 to Rose-Hulman (Ind.) and fell 1-0 to Capital (Ohio). Against Rose-Hulman, TLU senior center fielder Casey Salinas became TLU’s all-time steals leader with a stolen base in the first inning. Salinas swiped third base in the same inning and had two more stolen bases in the second game, against Capital.

Southwestern University right-hander Wes Willis tossed a complete-game shutout and struck out nine in a 9-0 victory over Texas Lutheran, Tuesday afternoon at Southwestern’s Rockwell Field.

The schedule for the Texas Lutheran baseball team's three-game series at Louisiana College has changed. The teams now will play a doubleheader on Friday, with the first game (a 7-inning contest) starting at 3:30 p.m. and the late game (scheduled for nine innings) starting no earlier than 6 p.m. Saturday's 9-inning game will start at noon. All games will be played at Louisiana College's Billy Allgood Field in Pineville, La.

TLU will have an internet-only broadcast of Friday's first game, and Seguin radio station KWED 1580 AM will broadcast the second game, starting at 6 p.m., on Friday. The KWED broadcast will also have a webcast.

Texas Lutheran University students will present a production of the comedic play “The Good Doctor,” Thursday, Feb. 28 through Saturday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, March 2 at 2:30 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium on the TLU campus.

Saturday at the University of Oklahoma Sooner Open indoor meet, Texas Lutheran senior Jessica Raglon cleared 11 feet, 0.25 inches in the pole vault and posted school records in the 60 and the triple jump.

The Texas Lutheran men’s golf team shot a first-round 305 Monday to lead the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Spring Invitational by six shots entering Tuesday’s final 18 holes. Tee times on Tuesday start at 8:30 a.m. at Temple’s Wildflower Country Club.

At Mill Creek Country Club, the Texas Lutheran women’s golf team shot an opening-round 378 Monday for a 12th-place showing at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Spring Invitational.

Texas Lutheran University accounting major Diana Strom of Seguin has received a $3,000 scholarship from the San Antonio chapter of Financial Executives International.  Strom was selected for the award as TLU’s top junior-level student in accounting and finance.

Brad Howard nailed a three-pointer with two seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to a season-ending 55-52 victory over Sul Ross State, Saturday afternoon in TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium.
