The computer science degree program at TLU offers a hands-on and student-centered approach to one of today’s most dynamic fields. Students build strong foundations in programming, problem solving, software development, systems, and artificial intelligence while applying their skills to real-world challenges. 

Texas Lutheran University’s computer science major prepares students to be job-ready in a technology-driven world. The program goes beyond teaching students how to use current technology. Students learn how computing systems work, how software is designed, and how artificial intelligence is developed and applied. This deeper understanding helps students build strong, adaptable skills that remain valuable as technology continues to change. With small classes, dedicated faculty, and opportunities for applied learning, students gain the confidence and preparation needed for meaningful careers in a rapidly evolving field. 

Why Computer Science at TLU?

TLU’s computer science program offers courses in programming languages, software design, artificial intelligence, computer architecture, operating systems, data structures, networking, algorithms, database design, etc. This range of courses gives students a strong technical foundation and allows them to explore different areas of the tech sector. 

Students have opportunities to apply what they learn beyond the classroom through campus work-study positions, software and technology projects, tutoring or grading roles, faculty-supported research projects, internships, and community partnerships. These experiences help students strengthen their programming, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills in practical settings. 

Students may also join the Association for Computing Machinery, where they can participate in ACM-related activities, events, and conferences. Together, these academic and experiential opportunities help prepare TLU computer science graduates with the technical depth, adaptability, and AI-resilient skills needed for today’s workforce and the future of computing.

Computer Science Expanded

Computer science offers a wide range of rewarding career opportunities in areas such as software development, cybersecurity, database management, artificial intelligence, systems analysis, and cloud computing. Graduates are prepared to work across many industries, including technology, business, government, healthcare, education, and nonprofit organizations. 

Experiences

The popular symbolic manipulator, MAPLE, is now being used in calculus and post-calculus courses to enhance teaching and the students’ learning abilities. Statistical software such as Minitabs is used in statistics classes to solve real-life projects.

Many students are employed by the department as tutors and graders. This is excellent career preparation for mathematics education majors. Students also can enroll in an internship program.

Student research activities are encouraged by the department. Every mathematics major will present a research paper as a senior seminar. The research is conducted under the supervision of a mathematics faculty member.

Student Organizations

TLU students have formed a chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery, allowing them to present papers in ACM-related events and conferences.

The TLU Math Club sponsors a Math Olympiad and Calculus Showdown for high school students each year.
