A Tribute: Honoring the Life and Work of Dr. Bill Squires

Dr. Bill Squires

Many, many TLU students passed through Dr. William “Bill” Squires’s classroom during their undergrad years. When they look back over that time, along with lessons learned, they remember an exceptional teacher and a positive influence—in short, one of those professors who really made a difference. A favorite.

So, it is with a mix of sadness and tremendous gratitude that the TLU family says goodbye to Dr. Squires, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 15, 2026, after a lengthy illness.

“It’s hard to express how much Bill Squires meant to TLU,” says TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell. “His passionate intellect, endless connections, and commitment to our students was truly remarkable.  We are grateful for his life and honored to keep his legacy alive.”

Squires, a professor of kinesiology and biology, dedicated some 37 years to TLU, teaching from 1980 to 2017. He held the Dr. Fredrick C. Elliott Chair in Health, Fitness, and Nutrition, as well as adjunct appointments at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of North Texas Health Science Center.

“He never found a student he was not willing to help,” says Dr. William Campaign, a local retired veterinarian whose teaching tenure at TLU overlapped that of Dr. Squires. “He always saw the good in everybody.”

A celebration of life service will be held in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence on the TLU campus on Sunday, November 8, at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William G. Squires Scholarship Fund at Texas Lutheran University, 1000 W. Court St., Seguin, TX 78155. Please write “William Squires Endowment” in the check memo or in an enclosed note so the gift reaches the right fund. Gifts may also be made online at https://www.tlu.edu/give/online-giving/ by selecting “Other” as the gift allocation and entering “William Squires Endowment.”
