The Texas Lutheran University Bands will open their 2026–2027 season on Friday, October 9, at 7 p.m. with “TRADITIONS,” a performance in Jackson Auditorium showcasing the full expressive range of woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The concert features both the TLU Symphonic Winds and the TLU Wind Ensemble.
Under the direction of Dr. Brett A. Richardson, Director of Bands and Baenziger Professor of Music, the Symphonic Winds open the evening with Ever-hope by TLU Composer-in-Residence Carol Brittin Chambers. Written to honor a young student battling brain cancer, the piece reflects a continuous state of hope amidst adversity.
“Carol Brittin Chambers is one of the most performed band composers today,” said Dr. Richardson. “Her music is full of life and energy, and this piece brilliantly captures the diverse tonal colors of the modern wind band.”
The first half of the program also features Frank Ticheli’s whimsical Portrait of a Clown, William Owens’ dynamic concert march Excelcior!, and W. Francis McBeth’s Canto, originally composed for the All-Japan Band Association in 1977.
The second half features TLU’s flagship wind band, the TLU Wind Ensemble. Opening with Nicole Piunno’s energetic fanfare Resound, the ensemble will also perform Eric Whitacre’s lyrical October and Morten Lauridsen’s expressive Contre Qui, Rose. The performance concludes with two landmark 1923 compositions by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Folk Song Suite and Sea Songs, which weave classic British folk melodies and sea chanteys into the wind band repertoire.
