The title of Christmas Vespers 2021 is taken from Susan Labarr’s choral work, “Where The Light Begins,” on a text by Jan Richardson. This advent text speaks beautifully about the peace and hope our world needs as we anticipate the coming of Christmas. Of this piece, the composer states, “When we love, accept, and care for all of our neighbors-despite our difference- we find that the light that the dark world so desperately needs begins in us.” An artist, writer, and ordained minister, Jan Richardson takes the idea that “We are where the light begins” to having us consider that “Perhaps it does not begin. Perhaps it is always.”
The varied program presented by the TLU choirs and instrumentalists explore these idea of light, peace, and hope. This year's Vespers service of word and music will feature the TLU Choir, TLU Treble Choir, Kantorei Chamber Choir, and the TLU Symphonic Winds and Percussion. San Antonio actress, Sam Carter Gilliam, will perform short monologues between the musical numbers which weave a story and lend context to the music being performed.
