Position Summary

Texas Lutheran University invites applications for a full-time Communications Specialist/Police Dispatcher.

Responsibilities include

General

  • Provide service, information and directions to the campus community and visitors.
  • Perform a full range of radio and telephone operational duties in our 24-hour operation center.
  • Enter and maintain accurate daily activity logs to include a variety of communication equipment, including radio console, telephone, fire alarm monitoring systems and monitor university cameras.
  • Receive emergency and non-emergency calls from staff, faculty, students, and the public requesting service and dispatch emergency personnel as necessary.
  • Comply with all of Texas Lutheran University policies and guidelines.
  • Assist with the training of new employees in the communication department.
  • Maintain current faculty/staff/student directory.
  • Maintain a log of all system telephones (locations and numbers).
  • Keep a current library of out-of-town directories and provide directory assistance and information to the public.
  • May perform general clerical duties.

Position qualifications include

Education High school diploma or equivalent

Experience This position requires at least three (3) months of work experience working with the public, to include receptionist, dispatching or related duties.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate with the community, visitors, officers and staff via phone and radio systems.
  • Ability to prioritize incoming calls and push out the necessary information to appropriate individuals in a timely manner.
  • Ability to maintain professional composure during high stress situations and obtain detailed information.
  • Must exercise good judgment in providing for the safety and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and Texas Lutheran University property.
  • Cooperates and collaborates with other employees in the spirit of teamwork and collegiality.
  • Effective telephone and oral communication skills, clear concise speaking voice, and the ability to type 25 wpm.
  • Must abide by attendance standards as this is a critical 24-hour operations center.
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.

Physical Demands

Work requires concentration for relatively short intervals only.
Work is primarily sedentary.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors in a typical office setting. This position is an essential emergency position. Will be required to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays. Must be flexible to work varying shifts based on the needs of the department. Current shift schedules are:

  • 12am to 8am
  • 8am to 4pm
  • 4pm to 12am

Workdays are 5 days on, 2 days off.

Organizational Data

This is a non-exempt position.
This position does not supervise other employees.
