Director of Alumni Relations

Texas Lutheran University invites applications for the position of Director of Alumni Relations.

This position reports to the Vice President for Development & Alumni Relations. The Director of Alumni Relations will develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive alumni relations program that effectively attracts and involves alumni, parents of alumni, and future alumni in substantive ways that support the university's mission. The Director will also develop programs and recruit alumni to interact with a number of university programs, including Academic Affairs, Career Development, Enrollment Services, Student Life, and University Relations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Advise the Vice President for Development & Alumni Relations on the development of policies and procedures to build alumni support for the university.
  • Develop programs, projects, and initiatives through which alumni can assist the university in achieving stated institutional goals.
  • Provide oversight of hard copy and/or electronic records for all official programs of the Alumni Relations Office. Manage department workflow.
  • Establish objectives, goals, and work plans for the Alumni Relations Office that will provide measurable positive outcomes, such as increasing the alumni giving rate and attendance at alumni events; establishing alumni networking groups and programs that provide opportunities for alumni to re-connect and stay connected with the university from the time they choose to attend TLU through the time that they become alumni. These objectives, goals, and work plans will provide support for furthering student involvement with the Alumni Relations Office through student and alumni mentoring programs, support the fundraising activities of the university, and enhance relationships with students, alumni, donors, and friends. Manage and Advise the Student Alumni Association.
  • Work with the Vice President for Development & Alumni Relations to recognize alumni through the nomination process for university awards. In conjunction with other staff and volunteers, assist in identifying and recruiting nominees for the Alumni Board; special alumni committees, such as Homecoming,; and other key volunteer positions.
  • Work with the Alumni Board of Directors and the Homecoming Committee to plan and implement all Homecoming activities, young alumni events, regional events, and all projects and events focusing on establishing relationships between students and alumni. Develop a strong alumni reunion program, as well as programs focused on reunions of specific populations within the TLU community, e.g., psychology major’s event.
  • Provide leadership in the collaborative process of developing a strategic plan for the Alumni Board that incorporates committee structure, meetings calendar, agendas, and goals and objectives for the Board.
  • Expand and enhance the role and work of the Alumni Board and its committee structure to educate volunteers and encourage leadership development training for alumni and future alumni. This will include mentoring programs, supporting the fundraising activities of the university, and enhancing relationships with students, alumni, donors, and friends.
  • Coordinate, manage and execute the Class Ring program. Work with the Class Ring Committee and the Director of Auxiliary Services to sell and market the official Class Ring. Plan and execute the Ring Ceremony once a year.
  • In conjunction with appropriate Development staff, assist in continuing to increase the alumni giving and participation rate in conjunction with department goals.
  • Work with the Director of Development Services to ensure the integrity of the alumni database and that all alumni records are current and correct.
  • Periodically survey alumni to determine areas of interest for alumni events and projects as well as preferences and trends.
  • Work with Marketing Communications Director to maintain current and effective web page communications, social media and an online Alumni community.
  • Work with the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations and the Director of Development Services in producing the Annual Report to the TLU community, including marketing and distribution.
  • Work with the Director of Development Services to produce the Alumni Directory every 3 to 5 years.
  • Active Member of Development Director Team.
  • Support and assist the Vice President for Development & Alumni Relations as needed.
  • Understand and support the mission of Texas Lutheran University


Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • A minimum of five years of management experience, at departmental level or above, in Alumni Relations or equivalent. Previous experience in volunteer service, leadership development, or board development helpful
  • Strong managerial, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to motivate people
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and consensus groups
  • Creativity
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Public speaking ability
  • A high degree of judgment is required to deal with complex factors which are not easily evaluated and make decisions based on conclusions for which there is little precedent
  • Work requires some travel, primarily in the state of Texas, and numerous weekend activities
