TLU Today

Texas Lutheran University will host three important lectures in November, beginning with a 7:30 p.m. speech on Nov. 10 by the new Chairman of the Board of General Motors. Ed Whitacre will present a free lecture about the American automobile industry and global economy at TLU to students and the community. Following Whitacre’s retirement as chairman of AT&T in 2007, he served TLU as Executive Professor of Business in Residence.

On. Nov. 17, Southwest Airlines’ Chairman Emeritus Herb Kelleher and President Emeritus Colleen Barrett will join TLU President Ann M. Svennungsen for “A Conversation on Leadership.” The informal discussion will be held at the Texas Lutheran University Excellence in Leadership Dinner in San Antonio, which raises funds for leadership scholarships.

On Nov. 18 and 19, TLU will present its 2009 Krost Symposium, “Two Americas: Income Inequality,” featuring keynote speaker Barbara Ehrenreich. She will discuss her experiences and her best-selling book Nickel and Dimed in her keynote speech at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18. The following day, a Q&A with Ehrenreich and a panel discussion will encourage student and audience interaction and questions.

The Human Race Machine – It’s a rare chance to see oneself in a new way – literally. The Human Race Machine, which will be on the TLU campus Oct. 5-9, is an entirely unique diversity experience, giving viewers the opportunity to envision themselves as a different race.

Designed to demonstrate that race is not a biological phenomenon – there is no gene for race – the Human Race Machine uses a camera inside a private booth to capture a participant’s image, and then the participant can use a joystick to morph the image into someone very different – different race, age, gender or facial anomaly. A powerful, yet subtle diversity tool, the Human Race Machine allows participants to move beyond appearance, and contemplate a deeper human connection.

In conjunction with the Human Race Machine, TLU will be showing the movie “RACE: The Power of Illusion.” The film, which is free and open to the public, will air at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4 and Wednesday, Oct. 7 in Wupperman Little Theatre.

The Human Race Machine, co-sponsored by TLU and the Guadalupe County Community Symposium, is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.humanracemachine.com.
