TLU Today
Spring commencement – Dr. John T. Masterson, provost and executive vice president, will present the commencement address at TLU’s spring commencement ceremonies, May 10 at 7 p.m. on the Chapel Lawn. Last month Masterson announced his plans to retire from TLU, effective May 31.
“We are delighted that our retiring provost will give this year’s commencement address. Dr. Masterson has devoted nearly 10 years of his professional career to this university – and will bring a wealth of wisdom and insight to our graduates,” TLU President Ann M. Svennungsen said. “More importantly, he’s a terrific speaker – and is held in high regard by our graduating seniors.”
Approximately 160 students will receive bachelor of arts, bachelor of business administration, bachelor of science, or bachelor of music degrees during the ceremony. All graduates and their friends and families are invited to a reception sponsored by the Alumni Association at Alumni Park, immediately following the graduation ceremonies.
The traditional baccalaureate service for the prospective graduates will be held at 10:30 a.m. the morning of graduation in Jackson Auditorium with The Rev. Greg Ronning, campus pastor, presiding.
Retirements – The end of this academic year is also a time when TLU will say farewell to several longtime faculty and staff members. Along with Provost John Masterson, others retiring include Dr. Joyce Kostelnik, associate professor of education and department chair; Dr. Saúl Sánchez, associate professor of modern languages and department chair; Gil Merkle, instructor of computer science; Harold Sager, vice president for principal gifts; Jeep Kiel, associate vice president for development; and Wynona Wells, coordinator of postal services.
Summer Programs – Although most students leave campus for the summer, TLU remains a busy place. Along with summer classes for college students, TLU is offering a variety of programs on campus this summer, including the Advanced Placement Summer Institute for teachers, the Summer Music Academy, and a variety of sports camps.
High school students have the opportunity to experience college life and earn college credit at the same time this summer by attending TLU’s Lone Star Scholars Academy (LSSA). LSSA has changed this year. Students may take either or both of the two one-week sessions, June 15-21 or June 22-28.
For information on LSSA and all of TLU’s summer programs, visit the TLU Web site or
