TLU knows that this can be an exciting and challenging time for the entire family, so we offer an orientation for parents and family members on Saturday after check-in and move-in. Our program will offer the opportunity to:
  • Meet with faculty and staff.
  • Hear from and talk with other families who have shared and are sharing the same transitional experience.
  • Discover issues relevant to students entering the TLU community.
  • Obtain information and tips to support your new Bulldog during this time of transition.

EVENTS

8 a.m.-Noon – Tschoepe Hall Foyer / Residence Halls
  • Centralized check-in for all new students.
  • Move-in for on-campus students.

8 a.m.-4 p.m. – Alumni Student Center, Fireside Lounge
  • Family Hospitality Room
    The hospitality room will allow parents a place to relax, have a snack and a cup of coffee. There will be parent brochures available, and it will be staffed the entire time to answer any questions you may have.

8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. – Alumni Student Center
  • Bookstore open for textbook purchase

10 a.m.-1 p.m. – Alumni Student Center
  • TLU Marketplace
    Check out local vendors, learn about the Bulldog Buddy discount program, pick up coupons and a snack, and sign up for a checking account.

11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. – Hein Dining Hall/Off-Campus Dining
  • Lunch ($5 for incoming students / $6 for others)
    Lucky’s Kennel: 9 a.m.- 2 p.m.
    For off-campus choices, check out the Bulldog Buddies list printed in the New Student 101 Handbook.

1- 4 p.m. – Clifton Hall Apartment
  • Health Center Open

1:30-2 p.m. – Memorial Gym- Jones Complex
  • Opening Family Orientation Session
    This session will allow those who attend to learn more about the relationship between the university and parents, receive a copy of the parent and family calendar and handbook, get a sneak peak at Family Weekend 2007, and find out more about the breakout sessions that follow.

2-2:30 p.m. – Jones Complex
  • Session 1 (Choose a session from the list on your right.)

2:45-3:15 p.m. – Jones Complex
  • Session 2 (Choose a session from the list on your right.)

3:30 p.m. – Jackson Auditorium Patio
  • Refreshment Break
    Meet up with your student for an ice cream sandwich in front of JacksonAuditorium before heading inside for Matriculation.

4-5 p.m. – Jackson Auditorium
  • Matriculation
    The purpose of this induction is to officially welcome the Class of 2011 into the TLU community. Families are encouraged to come. Excellent photo opportunity!

5 p.m. – Jackson Auditorium / Residence Halls

  • Listen to other parents explain how they survived their child’s first year at TLU and the tips that they learned from the experience. Students will also be present to answer questions.

The First in the Family to Go To College – How to Support Your First-Generation College Student
Jones Complex, Classroom #102
  • In this session, Dr. Maria Avalos, associate dean of student life and learning will chat with families on how to best support their first generation college student, especially during the critical first semester. Dr. Avalos will also explain all of the support services that TLU offers first generation college students.

Academic Advising and Academic Expectations
Fitness Center Classroom #101
  • Lisa Cradit, director of academic support, and two members of our faculty will discuss faculty expectations in the college classroom, touch on the roles of academic advisors, explain the academic support services available to students, and answer any questions you may have.

  • NCAA Division III athletics focuses on the student-athlete. Student first, athlete second.   • The process of paying bills and receiving financial aid can be extremely confusing. Cathleen Wright, director of financial aid, and Bridget Lawrence, student account manager, will offer information to make both processes as easy as possible and answer your questions.
