TLU Residency Requirements
Texas Lutheran University policy supports retention research that demonstrates that students who reside on campus are better able to form an important link with peers and faculty in the social and academic areas. Further, there is some evidence that residential students achieve higher grades than their non-residential counterparts. Students who become involved as members of the college community are typically more likely to invest greater effort in learning and persist until graduation.
Additionally, living on campus has many benefits, including:
- Convenient access to faculty, classrooms, computer labs, library, and recreational facilities
- Ability to easily meet people and make new friends quickly
- Live-in residence life staff to answer questions and provide assistance
- Educational, social, and developmental programs and activities especially designated for residents
All full-time students are required to live in TLU housing unless they meet one of the following criteria:
- 21 years of age or older at the beginning of the fall semester
- Married
- Senior status (90 completed semester hours) at the beginning of the fall semester
- Commuting from a parent's/guardian's permanent residence within a 50-miles radius of the campus
All students/applicants under the age of 18 will be reviewed on a case by case basis. Full-time students are enrolled in a minimum of twelve (12) semester hours. Full-time students who begin the academic year residing in TLU housing are committed to a full academic year of residency. Exceptions may be allowed for marriage, graduation, study abroad, student teaching or internship outside the local area, withdrawal from the university, or dropping to part-time enrollment status. Any request for an exemption from the TLU Residency Requirement may be submitted to the Residence Life Office. Students who fail to comply with the TLU Residency Requirement may face disciplinary sanctions and may still be assessed charges for campus housing.
