Why be a Peer Mentor?

Peer Mentors assist first year students during orientation and throughout the year with their personal and academic transition into the TLU community. This position is a year long commitment and includes:
  • facilitating orientation groups and planning orientation activities
  • attending the GEC 134 class he/she is paired with and playing an active role in class discussions
  • aiding the Director of Campus Programs in providing out-of-class experiences that provide support and guidance on first-year issues
  • serving as a role model to new students

What qualifications do I need to apply?

The candidate will…
  • Be a full time TLU student with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5
  • Have completed 24 credit hours by the start of August training
  • Be in good academic and disciplinary standing
  • Have involvement and leadership experience
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a culturally-diverse environment
  • Have a positive attitude and good judgment
  • Have knowledge of, and sensitivity to, first year students’ issues
  • Have knowledge of campus resources and policies
  • Have demonstrated a commitment to TLU
  • Receive excellent recommendations

What are the requirements for being a Peer Mentor?

  • Attend and arrive on time to all training, classes, activities and staff monthly meetings.
  • Return to campus early for Orientation training on August 13, 2007, and be available all-day from August 13-20, 2007.
  • Help with new student move-in.
  • Participate in orientation activities.
  • Facilitate student Orientation group discussions and team building activities.
  • Participate in all Orientation programming activities in the weeks following Orientation.
  • Assist with First Year activities such as Family Weekend, Major’s Fair, and Freshmen Fair.
  • Attend the assigned GEC class (3 hours a week), and coordinate out-of-class affiliated activities (4-6 hours per month) which will include presenting on topics and leading class discussions on relevant first-year issues.
  • Create a plan for contact with your freshmen.
  • Maintain good disciplinary and academic standing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

How much time does the peer mentor position take?

Spring Training
May 13-15, 2007
All training sessions are mandatory. During the sessions, the Peer Mentors will learn pertinent information about their role as a student leader on campus, specific Peer Mentor responsibilities, and about upcoming events.
 
Fall Training
August 13-17, All Day
Peer Mentors will return to campus on August 13. During the week, the Peer Mentors will prepare for new student arrival on campus on August 18.
 
Bulldog Orientation
August 18-20, All Day
During Orientation, Peer Mentors organize orientation events and lead freshmen in group activities.
 
Welcome Week
August 20-25, Times: TBA
Peer Mentors will also be responsible for helping with Welcome Week activities during the first week of school.

GEC 134Fall Semester
Peer Mentors will attend their GEC class with their freshmen.
 
Family Weekend – Fall Semester
Date: TBA
Peer Mentors will aid in facilitating Family Weekend.
 
Spring Semester
Dates: TBA
Peer Mentors will coordinate the Majors Fair, Freshmen Fair and meet with their freshmen for 1 hour per week.

How do I apply to be a Peer Mentor?

If you are interested in applying to become a peer mentor, either pick up an application in the Student Life and Learning Suite in Beck Center or download (PDF) the application. The application includes an application form, your resume, and two recommendation forms.

How does the selection process work?

The applications will be reviewed and selected candidates will be invited via e-mail to sign up for an interview by March 19th. Group and individual interviews will take place March 22-25. Applicants will be notified of their status by March 29, 2007.
