Career Assessment Tests
How assessment can help you with career planningSo, you've heard about the magic tests that Career Services offers that tell you what you should do for the rest of your life, right? WRONG! Assessment tests are a great resource but they should be viewed as a starting point for career research and planning rather than a quick fix. Here are a few things that assessments can do:
- Identify your strengths and weaknesses – what you do well and what you could do better.
- Pinpoint your interests and match them with tasks involved in a wide array of careers.
- Clarify your values, specifically what is most important to you in life.
- Look at the overlap among your strengths, interests and values to help you identify majors and careers for further exploration.
Types of assessment toolsSeveral assessment tools are available to help you identify your skills, interests, preferences, values and abilities. Which, if any, you use will depend on your needs and what your career counselor suggests.
