Charitable Lead Trusts
A Charitable Lead Trust allows you to provide immediate support for Texas Lutheran University while transferring assets to your heirs at a greatly reduced transfer tax cost. The lead trust pays either a fixed annuity or a fixed percentage to the university for a term of years. On termination of the lead trust, the trust assets revert to you or your heirs. Although the amount placed in a qualified lead trust is subject to gift and possibly estate and generation-skipping taxes, the present value of the total payout to charity is subtracted from this amount in determining how much is actually taxable. Tax benefits allowed depend on varying factors, such as the ultimate recipient of the trust.
