TLU Today

MLK Day celebration – TLU and the Seguin Martin Luther King Celebration Planning Committee will present an evening celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday, Jan. 18.  “Remember! Celebrate! Act!  A Day On …Not a Day Off” will feature a performance by Melanie D. Wilkinson, soloist, and will begin at 7 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium.

The program will include TLU students Kendra Funches, Lynnal Ndimande, Katra Francis and Joel Edmunds, all members of the TLU Black Student Union, who will present readings from “A Testament of Hope:  The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King Jr.,” edited by James M. Washington. Shaaron Melcher Conoly, associate professor of music and voice, TLU School of Music and a member of the MLK Planning Committee, will also present a reading.

This is the 12th year that TLU has presented the Sunday evening program honoring Dr. King.

Walt Wangerin to speak – Award winning author Walter Wangerin Jr. will be on the TLU campus Jan 21 to present a lecture, at 7 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium. He will also be speaking at chapel that morning at 10 a.m. Both events are free and open to the public.

Wangerin has worked as a university professor, an announcer for “Lutheran Vespers” radio program, and a pastor of an inner-city church.  He is a contributing writer for The Lutheran magazine; a frequent speaker throughout the nation on topics of faith, story telling, and writing; and a prolific author with more than 40 books encompassing a variety of genres:  fiction, essay, short essay, children’s story, meditation, and biblical exposition.  Wangerin has won the National Book Award, New York Times Best Children’s Book of the Year Award, and several Gold Medallions, including best-fiction awards for the Book of God and Paul: A Novel.

His most recent work released last May is Father and Son: Finding Freedom, which is written with his son Matthew.  The book tells each writer’s personal story and the relationship of fathers and sons, and it is a meditation on fatherly love and a son’s independence.

In February 2008, Wangerin also released the illustrated children’s story, I Am My Grandpa’s Enkelin, an original tale told by a granddaughter looking back at all that her German-American grandpa taught her.

Since 1991, Wangerin has been a member of the faculty of Valparaiso University in Indiana where he holds professorships in the English and theology departments.

Attention alumni – Start your new year by making a commitment to serve on Galveston Island with TLU students and other alumni. In response to the lingering devastation caused by Hurricane Ike, SAUCEY (Students and Alumni Unite in Civic Engagement-Yeah!) is organizing a second trip to clean and repair homes. On Saturday, Jan. 24, TLU students and Houston-area alumni will gather from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to work together, talk with residents, and toward the end of the day, reflect on the experience.

The deadline to RSVP is 5 p.m., Jan. 19. Please click here to complete the RSVP form and e-mail it to TLU Alumni Director Taylor Carleton at tcarleton@tlu.edu. It is necessary for everyone to RSVP in order to develop an accurate count. After you RSVP, additional details will be sent regarding where to meet and what to bring, including liability waivers.
