TLU Alumni Recommendation Award (TARA) – TLU alumni are invited to nominate a student entering TLU for as a first-time freshman for $1,000 in additional scholarship money. While an alumnus may nominate only one person per year, there is no limit to the number of students who can receive it. Deadline for submission for the spring semester is Dec. 1, and the deadline for the 2009 Fall Semester is May 1, 2009.

Krost Symposium – Author Keith Bowden will present the Frank Giesber Lecture at the 29th Annual Krost Symposium at TLU on Oct. 15. Bowden’s talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium. The 2008 Krost Symposium takes its theme, “Between Two Worlds,” from the prologue of Bowden’s book,
The Tecate Journals: Seventy Days on the Rio Grande, a true story of how he canoes, rafts and bikes the Rio Grande – the entire length of the Texas-Mexico border. Bowden will discuss his journey and will examine the social, political, and cultural connections between Texas and Mexico.
A photography exhibit, “Photos of the Rio Grande” by TLU Professor Emeritus of Chemistry Preston Reeves, will be on display at Jackson Auditorium Wednesday evening, Oct. 15, and the following day, it will be moved to the atrium lobby of Tschoepe Hall as the Krost Symposium continues.

Two panel discussions will take place on Oct. 16 in the Dunne Conference Center of Tschoepe Hall. At 1 p.m., led by Bowden, panelists will discuss “The Writing Process,” and at 3 p.m. current students will discuss international study.
At 8 p.m. on Oct. 16, Krost and the MASA will present a musical performance and dance featuring the Grammy nominated band Avizo at TLU’s Student Activity Center at Jackson Park.

Record enrollment – The 2008 Fall Semester saw a record enrollment for TLU with 1,360 full-time students, up from 1,307 last year. The total enrollment, which includes part-time as well as those in the dual participation and special programs, is 1,432 students, compared to 1,375 last year.
TLU welcomed 396 first-time freshmen, the second largest freshman class for the university. In 2004, TLU had 399 first-year freshmen and 365 last year. The enrollment includes 51 percent female and 49 percent male students, and an increased diversity on campus with 25 percent of the incoming freshmen and 20 percent of the overall student body reporting a Hispanic ethnicity. Ten percent of TLU students are African American.
Chanticleer – TLU Cultural Activities Committee is bringing the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer to Jackson Auditorium on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. Tickets will be available for the concert beginning Monday, Oct. 6. The tickets are free, but will be required.
Based in San Francisco, Chanticleer has developed a remarkable reputation for its vivid interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to bold new music. With its blend of 12 male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as “an orchestra of voices.”

Excellence in Leadership – TLU will honor business executive Graham Weston at the eighth annual Excellence in Leadership Dinner, Nov. 19. Weston, a former member of the university’s Board of Regents, is the chairman of Rackspace® Hosting, Inc.
The Excellence in Leadership event begins with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m. The format for the evening includes a discussion between TLU President Ann M. Svennungsen and Weston on the qualities required to lead in today’s business environment.
