The year begins – President Ann M. Svennungsen declared the official beginning of Texas Lutheran University’s 117th academic year at the traditional Opening Convocation on Aug.21. To hear her convocation address, click

Save the Date!! – President Svennungsen’s inaugural celebration is scheduled for the weekend of Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 2008. The installation ceremony is tentatively scheduled to take place early Friday afternoon, Feb. 1, in Jackson Auditorium. An Inauguration Planning Committee representing students, faculty, staff, alumni, and regents will soon be appointed, and planning for the installation ceremony and other inauguration events will soon begin in earnest. For now, save this important date on your calendar!
Congratulations to TLU student
Aida Sopa of Kosovo, who was honored this summer as one of 17 international students attending ELCA colleges and universities to receive a scholarship from the Phoebe Herman Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The traditional TLU homecoming is set for the first weekend in October and all alumni are invited and encouraged to attend. Special events this year include the TLU Salutes Banquet on Oct. 5, the Bill Miller Celebration Dinner on Oct. 6, and special activities for the Golden Group, including this year’s honorees from the Class of 1957.
On Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Reunion Lunch, those from the classes of 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, and 2007 along with band and baseball alumni will be honored.
The TLU Alumni Board would like to extend a special invitation to the All TLU Reunion Party at Jackson Park on Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. It’s a BYOB affair, so bring your ice chests and your lawn chairs and gather with your friends and classmates to reminisce about the good old days. Appetizers, sodas, and tea will be available, but if you want any other libation, feel free to bring it. Only alumni 21 years or older will be admitted to this event.

Growing & Giving
Excellence in Leadership Dinner tickets are going fast! The honoree for this year’s dinner, which will be held Nov. 1 at the Westin Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio, is AT&T executive John T. Montford. Proceeds from the dinner support TLU’s Presidential Award for Leadership and Service Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated leadership abilities on campus and in their churches and communities.

In Memoriam
Betty Jean Jones, long-time friend of Texas Lutheran University, passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2007 in Seguin. Jones is an alumna, former mayor of Seguin, honorary degree recipient, and the driving force behind the restoration of TLU’s Fritz Homestead, which once belonged to her family.

Here’s a wrap-up of TLU’s first weekend of fall sports:Football – Sul Ross State University’s 26-yard field goal with 7:52 to play in the game provided the winning margin in a 33-31 victory over TLU Saturday evening. TLU’s Anthony Smith scored on the opening kickoff when he went 92-yards nearly untouched. The sophomore tailback also scored on runs of 10 and 28 yards. Smith finished the evening with 26 rushes for 124 yards and two rushing TDs. Andy Puryear led the TLU defense with a career-best 19 tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception.
Volleyball – Nationally ranked Trinity University survived a tough road test from TLU with a 36-34, 26-30, 32-30, 30-27 victory Friday evening at TLU’s Tostengard Activity Center. TLU received 21 kills from senior Amber Meeks, who also added 15 digs. Kristen Eldridge and Jamie Lassiter posted 17 and 12 kills, respectively. Freshman Jessica Stetler had a team-best 22 digs, and Megan Purser had a match-high 55 assists.
Cross Country – TLU women’s cross country team opened its 2007 season at the Baylor Twilight on Friday evening and came away with an eighth-place finish. Baylor won the meet followed by Texas A&M, Lamar, SMU, TCU, Houston, Dallas Baptist, TLU and the University of Texas at Tyler. The TLU women’s team was led by freshman Magan Saenz who placed 47th overall with a time of 15:53.
Women’s Soccer – Kelli Layden scored both TLU goals as the Bulldogs edged NCAA Division II provisional member Texas A&M International 2-1 Monday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. Layden, a junior forward, scored from 15 yards out in the second minute to give TLU the quick 1-0 lead. Katie Kistner made five saves for TLU.
Men’s Soccer – Texas A&M International scored two goals in the first half and shutout the Bulldogs for a 2-0 victory Monday at Dustdevil Field. TLU junior keeper Chris Gerhardt made five saves for TLU.
