Three honored for volunteerism – Three members of the TLU community were presented the 2007 Jon and Sandra Moline Center for Servant Leadership Service Award during ceremonies on Thursday.
Receiving the faculty award was Beth Barry, lecturer, English and communication studies department. Barry and her husband, Bill, have chaired the Great Strides Walk at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels for several years, raising awareness and over $100,000 for research for cystic fibrosis.
Marie Paiz, assistant to the dean of the College of Professional Studies, received the staff award. Paiz is committed to education, both at TLU and in the community. She teaches GED courses through the Seguin ISD, and she also teaches GED classes to inmates in the Guadalupe County Jail.
The student award recipient was Michelle Milini, a senior theology major from Fort Worth. At TLU, Milini has been involved in many service projects and is serving as president of the TLU Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. She led the Habitat Collegiate Challenge spring break trip to North Carolina this year.
Commencement set May 12 – Approximately 175 graduates will be awarded bachelor degrees during Texas Lutheran University’s 116th spring commencement, Saturday, May 12. Also at the ceremony, The Rev. Jon Lee, recently retired senior pastor of King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas and a long-time member of the TLU Board of Regents, will receive an honorary doctor of divinity degree.
Dr. Richard Ekman, president of the Council of Independent Colleges in Washington D.C., will deliver the commencement address. TLU President Dr. Jon N. Moline has served on the Board of Directors of CIC for several years. This will be Moline’s last commencement as president before he retires June 30.
The commencement ceremonies will be held beginning at 7 p.m. on the Chapel Lawn and are open to the public. In case of rain, they will be moved to Memorial Gymnasium and seating will be limited to those holding tickets. Baccalaureate services will begin at 10:30 a.m., May 12, in Jackson Auditorium.
Summer programs – Registration is now open for TLU’s exciting array of summer programs. The Lone Star Scholars Academy (LSSA) is a two-week residential opportunity for academically talented high school students to take two college credit courses from various disciplines that are designed specifically for the academy and are taught by TLU professors and visiting faculty members. Bulldogs grab ASC Championships in women’s, men’s golf – The Bulldogs brought home two American Southwest Conference Championship trophies to Seguin after sweeping the conference women’s and men’s golf titles in April.
At Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in Dallas, the TLU women ended Mary Hardin-Baylor’s run of seven consecutive ASC Championships. The ASC title is the first conference championship in school history for the TLU women’s golf team.
The TLU women, with a two-round team score of 669, posted a seven-shot victory over the Crusaders. Four Bulldog golfers placed in the top 10: freshman Carly Hansen tied for second, freshman Angela Aufderhaar placed fifth, senior Brynn Waggoner tied for eighth, and freshman Sarah Thompson tied for eighth. Hansen and Aufderhaar earned spots on the ASC All-Conference First Team. Waggoner and Thompson made the ASC All-Conference Second Team.
The TLU women will make their first-ever team appearance at the national tournament. The NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships will take place May 8-11 at El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

On the men’s side, TLU repeated as the conference team champion. Led by freshman Ryan Kiel, who won the individual title by two shots, the Bulldogs held on for a five-shot win over McMurry.
Kiel posted the two-shot win over LeTourneau’s Patrick Palmer to keep the ASC men’s individual title in TLU’s possession. Bulldog Michael Faterkowski, a four-time All-ASC performer, won the 2006 individual championship. Ray Garza, who won the individual title in 2002, is the only other Bulldog to take the individual ASC title.
Junior Tanner Carter tied for third and joined Kiel on the ASC All-Conference First Team.
The TLU men will make their third consecutive appearance at the national championships. The Bulldogs have finished 12th in each of the last two national tournaments.
The NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships will be held May 15-18 in Fishers, Ind., at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club and in Carmel, Ind., at Prairie View Golf Club. Anderson University and the Hamilton Country Convention and Visitors Bureau will serve as championship hosts.
H.C. Tran, a 1990 TLU graduate, coaches both the men’s and women’s golf teams at TLU.
Baseball team in play-offs – The nationally ranked TLU Bulldogs advanced to the four-team, double-elimination round of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Series with a 17-6 win over Mississippi College in the third and final game of the ASC divisional playoff series.
With the series win, the Bulldogs move to the championship round of the ASC Championship Tournament series for the third season in a row. The Bulldogs have won the last two championship tournaments to advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Bulldogs will open the four-team, double-elimination portion of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament Series at 11 a.m. Friday, May 4, against the University of the Ozarks.
All tournament games will be played at the University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson and will be broadcast on Seguin radio station KWED 1580 AM. The games will be simulcast on
www.kwed1580.com.
The second round continues on Saturday with the championship game played at 1 p.m. Sunday. The winner of the tournament receives the ASC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III tournament.
