Winter commencement set – Federal judge Xavier Rodriguez will present the commencement address at Texas Lutheran University’s winter commencement ceremonies, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium on the TLU campus. Approximately 80 students will receive bachelor of arts, bachelor of business administration, bachelor of science, or bachelor of music degrees.

A former Texas Supreme Court Justice, Rodriguez currently sits on the bench as a United States District Judge for the Western District of Texas and is a member of the TLU Board of Regents.

Rodriguez received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a master’s degree from the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs and his J.D. from the University of Texas Law School.

A baccalaureate service for the prospective graduates will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 15 in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence, with The Rev. Greg Ronning, campus pastor, presiding.

Inauguration information – A number of special events and activities are planned for Inauguration Weekend, Jan. 31-Feb. 2, 2008, including a special lecture by Ray Suarez, author and senior correspondent for PBS’ The News Hour; a special exhibit by artists Kristi Ylvisaker and Mary Ylvisaker Nilsen; an inaugural worship service with The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, preaching; and community-wide inaugural service projects.

TLU President Ann M. Svennungsen will be inaugurated as the university’s 14th president in an installation ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, in Jackson Auditorium.  More information is available at www.tlu.edu/inauguration.

Christmas Vespers in Austin – TLU Christmas Vespers will be presented at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church, 606 W. 15th St. in Austin at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. Seating is on a first-come basis.

This year’s Vespers is titled “Peace I Leave With You,” and is a service of music and word that focuses on the lineage of David and the Messiah through the life and relationships of the Biblical figure of Ruth.

The performance includes the world premieres of two pieces composed for Christmas Vespers:  “Celtic Prayer,” by Deb Mayes and “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly” by Dr. Douglas Boyer, director of the TLU School of Music.

Many familiar pieces of the Christmas season will be performed by the ensembles and other hymns will be sung by the congregation including “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and “Joy to the World.”

Football – Texas Lutheran football player Matt Alves has achieved another first for TLU Athletics. Alves has been named to the First Team of the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Team in the College Division.

Alves is the first Bulldog football player in school history to be a First Team selection. He is also the first TLU football player to be a two-time Academic All-American. Alves was a Second Team Academic All-America choice in 2006.

The Academic All-America teams are nominated and selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Alves, the holder of a 3.93 grade point average, is a senior business administration major, is a member of several academic honor societies, and is a May candidate for graduation.

Alves’ selection marks the 14th time in school history a TLU student-athlete has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.  He joins three-time selection Natalie Wood (women’s track and field, 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07), two-time selection Tommy Stolhandske (men’s basketball, 2003-04 and 2004-05), two-time selection David Stahl (men’s soccer, 2002-03 and 2003-04), Chantel Mize (women’s basketball, 1998-99), Amy Behlen (softball, 2002-03), Tracy Heathcock (women’s volleyball, 2003-04), Angela Bagwell (women’s volleyball, 2004-05), and Abby Cochran (women’s golf, 2005-06).

Alves joins Stolhandske and Mize as the only TLU student-athletes to be named First Team Academic All-Americans.

A linebacker, Alves is a three-time ASC All-Academic honoree and TLU’s football nominee for the new ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team. In his four-year football career with TLU, he collected 112 total tackles and had 19.0 tackles for loss.
