Molines recognized – Resolutions recognizing Dr. Jon N. Moline and Sandra Moline for their years of service at TLU were adopted by the Texas Senate and the Texas House of Representatives in Austin on Monday, April 2. The Senate resolution, sponsored by State Senators Jeff Wentworth and Judith Zaffirini, and the House resolution, sponsored by Rep. Edmund Kuempel, recognized the dramatic increases in enrollment, financial support, and other achievements of the university during Moline’s administration. He will retire on June 30.
Faculty members granted tenure, promoted – The TLU Board of Regents has granted tenure to five faculty members and announced five faculty promotions. Granted tenure were Dr. Robin Bisha, assistant professor of communication studies; Dr. Eric Daub, assistant professor, School of Music; Dr. Lorne Davis, associate professor of physics; Dr. Joyce Kostelnik, associate professor of education; and Terry Price, assistant professor of dramatic media.
Dr. John McClusky, associate professor of chemistry, has been promoted to professor of chemistry. Bisha, Dr. Pam Johnston, assistant professor of English studies; Dr. Carolyn Schneider, assistant professor of theology; and Dr. Steve Vrooman, assistant professor of communication studies, were all promoted to the rank of associate professor.
Noted vocalists to perform – The Texas Lutheran University School of Music will present a recital tribute to James Joyce at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, in Ayers Recital Hall of the Schuech Fine Arts Center. The tribute to James Joyce will feature soprano Laurel Thomas, a member of the music faculty at Saint Mary’s College in Baltimore; tenor Brian Manternach, who has taught voice at the University of Notre Dame and Holy Cross College and is currently pursuing his doctorate at the Indiana University Jacobs School of music; and pianist Jeffrey Jacob, who has performed as a soloist with the London Philharmonic, the Sao Paulo Symphony, and the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, among others.
The recital, a tribute to the works of James Joyce, begins and ends with excerpts from the author’s novel, Finnegan’s Wake. The author had considered pursuing a professional singing career, and music would be a strong, continuing influence, as witnessed by the numerous musical references found throughout his literary works. The program is free and open to the public.
Summer programs – Registration is now open for TLU’s exciting array of summer programs. The Lone Star Scholars Academy (LSSA) is a two-week residential opportunity for academically talented high school students to take two college credit courses from various disciplines that are designed specifically for the academy and are taught by TLU professors and visiting faculty members. Other programs include Advanced Placement Institute, Summer Music Academy, a number of sports camps, and other opportunities. To learn more about TLU’s summer programs, visit

| TLU’s first NCAA Division III national championship team was honored at a reception last month at the Dunne Conference Center. The 4X400 meter relay team of juniors Taffey Gray, Staci Jackson, Ashley Williams and sophomore Casey Toombs posted a time of 3 minutes, 52.17 seconds at the national meet in Terre Huate, Ind. The team was honored with a congratulatory cake and a tremendous round of cheers as the crowd watched the replay of the race on Dunne Conference Center’s big screens. To view the race click here. |

Baseball team nationally ranked – Two-time defending American Southwest Conference champion Texas Lutheran is ranked 12
th in the first regular American Baseball Association/ Collegiate Baseball Poll for NCAA Division III.
On Monday, April 2, the Bulldogs moved to the top of the American Southwest Conference West Division standings by completing a three-game sweep of Howard Payne with 5-4 and 12-2 wins at HPU’s Don Shepard Park.
The Bulldogs hold the division lead at 10-1 entering a three-game series with second-place Mary Hardin-Baylor this weekend. The Bulldogs and Crusaders play a 9-inning game at 2 p.m. Thursday and a doubleheader starting at Friday. All of the games will be played at TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field.
TLU improved to 23-4-1 overall with the two wins over Howard Payne. Texas Lutheran has now won 10 consecutive games. The ASC tournament will be held April 27-28. Keep up-to-the-minute with Bulldog baseball at

New men’s basketball coach named – Tommy Jones has been hired as the head men’s basketball coach, TLU Director of Athletics Bill Miller announced March 30. Jones brings 27 years of coaching experience to TLU. Jones was the head coach at Houston Baptist University from 1984-88 and has served as an NCAA Division I assistant at the University of Houston, Rice University, Houston Baptist and the University of Texas at El Paso.
Coach Jones has worked with 17 players who have played either professional basketball or football. He has coached five NBA players and 10 international league basketball players.
“Tommy Jones brings a wealth of experience to Texas Lutheran, and we are truly proud now to call him our men’s basketball coach,” said Miller. “I am excited about moving forward with Coach Jones. I know that Coach Jones will provide quality leadership for our men's basketball program.”
Jones will coach at the university where his son Josh played four years and earned his bachelor’s degree. Josh Jones played at TLU from 1993 to 1997 and scored 949 points for the Bulldogs.
Spring football – Football Coach Dennis Parker will see his team play its first game under his direction in a 21,000 seat stadium in Chihuahua, Mexico. During a press conference at TLU late last month, Parker and Carlos Altamirano, first-year coach of the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua, announced that their teams would meet at 5 p.m., May 24.
For the Bulldogs, the international spring exhibition game gives the team 10 days of padded practice under NCAA regulations. Practices for the game will begin on May 11. “This is an outstanding educational and cultural opportunity for our players,” said Parker. “It also gives me and our new coaches the opportunity to see the Bulldogs in Pads and in competition.”
The meeting between the two teams will be the inaugural game at Chihuahua’s new 21,000 seat stadium. Coach Altamirano said he is expecting the game to be sold out.
