Students Take First at Investment Competition
February 19, 2018
The Bulldog Investment Company team—featuring students Austin Speed, Audra Bahr, and Chase Dawkins—won first place at the Texas Investment Portfolio Symposium (TIPS) Portfolio Managers Competition on February 17, 2018, defeating MBA programs from Baylor University, Tulane University, Texas State University and the University of North Texas. TLU was also the only non-division one school and one of very few teams comprised of undergraduate students.
TIPS is similar to a “finals presentation” that all investment firms make to compete for an institutional account. The competition consisted of 10-minute presentations by student teams representing each finalist school followed by a question-and-answer period.
Each team provided a description of the team’s investment philosophy, decision-making process, investment style and a review of the long-term investment results. Basically, each team had 10 minutes to convince the judges – a panel of seasoned investment professionals – that they should be hired to manage this hypothetical account. The judges selected a winner based on their perception about which team’s investment process would most likely produce the best results over time.
