TLU Student Elisa Wellnitz Awarded the Ed Whitacre Leadership Scholarship
December 06, 2012
Texas Lutheran University (TLU) is proud to announce Elisa Wellnitz, junior theology major, as the 2012 recipient of the Ed Whitacre Leadership Scholarship. Presented by the San Antonio Greater Chamber of Commerce, Wellnitz will receive $5,000 at the Dec. 6, 2012 Chamber Gala and $5,000 at the beginning of her senior year in Fall 2013. Out of the top five finalists, three including Wellnitz, were from TLU.
Wellnitz is a council member of TLU’s Campus Ministry, vice-president of Water To Thrive, historian of the Xi Tau sorority, an admissions ambassador, and youth director at St. John’s Church in Marion, Texas. After exhibiting exemplary leadership traits in campus and academic activities, as well as holding a cumulative GPA of 3.85, Wellnitz was selected by the San Antonio Chamber as this year’s winner.
In addition to those qualifications, applicants were asked to write essays about how they demonstrate leadership in their own lives. After reading about Ed Whitacre, Wellnitz said she was inspired by his passion and dedication.
“I see a piece of Mr. Whitacre’s passion and courage in myself,” Wellnitz said. “His attention to detail and ability to work with people made him a respected person in the positions he held. With my involvement on campus and in the community, I find myself being the detail-oriented piece of a group’s puzzle. Mr. Whitacre is a driven individual who helped direct the vision for General Motors and its employees. While I’m doing things on a much smaller scale right now for my church community, I hope I can aspire to affect the lives of as many people as he has throughout his career.”
TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey said this scholarship award speaks to the caliber of students enrolled at TLU.
“We are extremely proud of Elisa as well as TLU students Savannah Erskine and Arthur Munoz who were in final consideration for the scholarship,” Dorsey said. “With her dedication to service, learning and community, Elisa exemplifies the mission of Texas Lutheran and serves as an inspiration to others on how to lead.”
