February 12, 2013
Texas Lutheran University (TLU) recently received a $300,000 gift from Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in San Antonio to establish scholarships for Lutheran students and students who have a financial need.
Peace Lutheran Church, which held its closing service on January 13, 2013, received a bequest from a former member, Helen Stratton, in June 2012. The Stratton bequest, along with the funds from the sale of the church, will be used to establish two scholarships to benefit TLU students.
The first scholarship is The Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, San Antonio Scholarship. It has been established to support the education of Lutheran students from the San Antonio area or any student of financial need. The second scholarship is The Richard and Helen Stratton Memorial Scholarship established by Peace Lutheran Church to memorialize the life and bequest of Richard and Helen Stratton. It is to be directed to Lutheran students from the San Antonio area, or for any student of financial need.
In presenting the gift to TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey, Elsie Wendel, charter member of the congregation, parent of a TLU alumnus and grandparent of a TLU alumnae said, “It was an honor to be able to be a part of making this lasting gift to the university that means so much to me and my family.”
“On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, I would like to thank Peace Lutheran Church, its members and the Stratton family for their generous gift and support of TLU,” said Dorsey. We are honored to receive this gift which will allow others to enjoy the many benefits of a Lutheran education.”
