TLU Alumnus Gene Vivroux Donates $2 Million For A Gift Annuity

January 16, 2013

Texas Lutheran University (TLU) recently received a generous gift from alumnus Gene Vivroux ’60. The gift, which includes a cash donation and the building that previously housed the family’s local hardware business in downtown Seguin established a $2 million gift annuity. Being the first charitable gift annuity of this size for TLU, Vivroux has become a philanthropic leader for the university.

Vivroux and his family have a long history as residents and business owners in Seguin. In 1869, his great-grandfather started Vivroux Hardware located at 110 S. Austin St. A century later, he took over the family business and ran the store until it closed in 2001. Vivroux is also the great-great-grandson of Johann Fritz. The Fritzes donated 15 acres of their homestead to TLU in 1912 when it relocated from Brenham, Texas to Seguin. The family’s 19th century farmhouse is still located on the TLU campus, serving as a place for university and community events.

Growing up, Vivroux said his parents were always proponents of quality education. His decision to donate this gift stems from his lifelong commitment to education and his passion for helping young people.

“Today, a college education can be very expensive,” Vivroux said. “I saw how hard my parents worked to help pay for my education from the time I was 5-years-old through the time I earned my master’s degree. This gift is to help the university provide an outstanding experience to future generations of TLU students.”

The university hopes Vivroux’s gift will pave the way for other alumni to think about the wonderful impact their own generosity could make.

"Texas Lutheran University is fortunate to have alumni like Gene who not only have a passion for their alma mater, but a strong philanthropic spirit,” said TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey. “We are pleased to accept this extraordinary gift that will benefit future generations of TLU students.”
