Through the Office of the Texas Governor Greg Abbott, TLU is the recipient of a $495,544 grant from Wagner-Peyser funds—a federally funded program that matches employers with qualified job seekers. A continuation of the project, “Creating a 21st Century Healthcare Workforce in Underrepresented Rural Areas,” this grant will increase educational opportunities for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds by providing programming, support for faculty, and scholarships for students entering TLU’s nursing program.

“The continuation of the Wagner-Peyser grant means a lot to the university and to our region,” said TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey. “The resources will support our mission of preparing highly trained and competent health care professionals who will expand access and improve health outcomes in our underserved region. It’s also an indication of the success and growth of this vibrant program.”

The grant targets education and workforce development activities for registered nurses who need to improve their knowledge, skills, and competencies to meet current healthcare market demands, as well as students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

“With the complexity of healthcare, a competent and professional workforce is vital when delivering safe, high quality care to diverse populations,” said TLU’s Director of Nursing Dr. Kathie Aduddell. “The continuation of this project allows us to address the need for a higher educated workforce, specifically registered nurses with a BSN degree, in this region of Texas.”

About Wagner-Peyser Funds: On July 22, 2014, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which reauthorizes Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998, was enacted to assist persons to secure employment and workforce information by providing a variety of job search assistance and information services without charge to job seekers, including persons with disabilities and to employers seeking qualified individuals to fill job openings. (Wagner-Peyser Act of 1933, as amended by the WIA of 1998.)
