Arizona pastor brings broad experience in young adult ministry, inclusive worship

Texas Lutheran University today announced it has named Rev. Kara Joy Stewart its new campus pastor. Pastor Stewart currently serves Living Christ Lutheran Church in Flagstaff, Ariz., a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The congregation is an inclusive congregation open to the diversity of people within its community and has an active outreach to Northern Arizona University, the Navajo Lutheran Mission and a variety of local hunger programs. She will join the TLU community in mid-June.

Prior to taking the call to Flagstaff in 2009, she served three congregations in Summerville and Charleston, S.C. She is active in young adult ministry and helped provide campus ministry to The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., as well as Northern Arizona University while living and serving in Flagstaff.

“On behalf of our faculty, staff, students and search committee members, we are excited to welcome Pastor Kara Stewart to the TLU community,” said TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey. “Kara’s energy and enthusiasm for young adult ministry and her passion for inclusive worship and community outreach endeared her to our faculty, staff, and most importantly our students. This position is one of the most important roles at TLU as our campus pastor guides us in our mission to be a community of faith and learning.”

Pastor Stewart is a 1995 graduate of Furman University in Greenville, S.C., where she studied music and history. She earned her master’s of divinity at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, in 2002. She is currently completing her certificate in Spiritual Formation from the Shalem Institute in Washington, D.C. Pastor Stewart is passionate about young adult ministry, ecumenical work, creativity and worship. She loves worship planning, music and the arts and is a trained soprano.

The Rev. Stan Meyer, chair of the campus pastor search committee, added: “With the appointment of Pastor Kara Stewart, TLU begins a new and exciting chapter in its long and outstanding history of campus religious life. Pastor Stewart brings fresh and engaging energy to campus ministry – especially in its offering of pastoral care, creative worship experiences and opportunities for spiritual growth and formation.”
