Professor’s Podcast Featured at SXSW
March 7, 2017
Public speaking. Those two words are enough to make some run away screaming. Communication Studies Professor Dr. Steve Vrooman spends a lot of time teaching and training people to embrace public speaking. His podcast, Every Speaker Has A Story, takes it even a step further by interviewing professional speakers about their experiences, horror stories, and the influences behind what they do.
On Thursday, March 15, Vrooman will broadcast a live one-hour episode from SXSW in Austin with special guests Quincy Larson of freeCodeCamp.com, POPSUGAR Studios President David Grant, Hugh Forrest, Director of SXSW Interactive, Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Sarah Moshman, and CEO of Prologue Immersive Kimberly Cooper. They will discuss their own experiences and common misconceptions about public speaking.
“I was really inspired by a podcast called The Spark & The Art that Michelle [my wife] listens to while drawing,” Vrooman said. “It talks about what inspires artists in their work. I thought it was an interesting concept and wondered if it would work the same way for public speaking. There are a ton of materials out there that offer advice on how to be better at it, but there wasn’t anything that was actually talking to professionals about what inspires them and why.”
Vrooman admits he was surprised SXSW asked him to broadcast and is grateful for the recognition.
“I’m looking forward to having my guests give tips or feedback on what others can possbily do to be selected for professional events like SXSW,” he said. “I’d also love for more people to find the show and connect with me. This is a really great, fun opportunity to share what I’m doing.”
