Texas Lutheran University will host three important events in November, beginning Nov. 10 with a speech by
Ed Whitacre, chairman of the board of General Motors. He will discuss the automobile industry and the economy at 7:30 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. The admission is free. Following Whitacre’s retirement as chairman of AT&T in 2007, he served TLU as Executive Professor of Business in Residence.

On Nov. 18 and 19, TLU will present its
2009 Krost Symposium, “Two Americas: Income Inequality,” featuring keynote speaker
Barbara Ehrenreich. She will discuss her experiences and her best-selling book
Nickel and Dimed in the Frank Giesber speech at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18. At 10:30 a.m., Nov. 19, a panel discussion on income inequality issues will be moderated by Dr. Justin Dubas, TLU assistant professor of economics. Panel participants will be Hal Adams, vice president, Valero Retail Holdings; Don Baylor, senior policy analyst for economic opportunity, Center for Public Policy Priorities; Susan Mika, Socially Responsible Investment Coalition; and Carolyn J. Newman, president and co-founder of Audimation Services.
In conjunction with the 2009 Krost Symposium, TLU will present a dramatic media production of
Nickel and Dimed. Joan Holden’s stage adaptation is a focused comic epic shadowed with tragedy. The play shows the life a third of working Americans now lead. Performances will be in Jackson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 17 and Nov. 19, and at 3 p.m. on Nov. 20.

TLU Christmas Vespers – Free tickets are now available for the 2009 Christmas Vespers, presented Dec. 4-6 at Jackson Auditorium. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4 and 5; and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6.
Vespers is an annual Christmas celebration of music and word at Texas Lutheran, and this year’s performance, under the direction of Dr. Doug Boyer, director of the TLU School of Music, is titled, “How Still He Rests.”
Tickets are available at the TLU Bookstore, located in the Alumni Student Center on campus. Bookstore hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Homecoming Saturday, Nov. 7, the TLU Bookstore will be open 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
Ticket orders may also be placed by phone, e-mail, and online. When ordering tickets, be sure to include your name, phone number, address, date and time of performance you wish to attend, and the number of tickets needed.

www.tlu.edu/vespers. Tickets will be mailed to the provided address.
TLU will present a special performance of Christmas Vespers in Austin on Dec. 13 at 5 p.m. at St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 606 West 15th Street in downtown Austin. Tickets are not required for this performance.
At each performance a freewill offering will be taken.

Are you ready for Homecoming 2009? “Spirit Lives Here” will begin Friday, Nov. 6 with special events for the Golden Group, this year honoring the Class of 1959. The annual golf tournament registration begins at 11 a.m. with tee off at 1 p.m., and don’t miss the TLU Salutes Reception and Banquet, Friday night at 6:30 p.m. A special book signing by Tom and Kim Wilkens will take place on Saturday in the TLU Bookstore for their newly published “Un-American Activities: Countercultural Themes in Christianity." The sub-title is "A modern father and a postmodern daughter reflect on their pilgrimages of life and faith."

Dr. Mark Gilbertson was recognized last month as the 2009-10 Texas Lutheran Athletics Honorary Coach. He retired from TLU in May 2009 after 36 years of dedicated and exemplary service as a professor of philosophy and last year as interim provost. Even in retirement, Gilbertson continues to be a faithful fan of the Bulldogs.
Gilbertson earned his B.A. from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He and his wife, Pat, are the parents of two adult sons, Eric and Tor.
Each year TLU Athletics honors a community member, faculty member, or staff person as the Honorary Coach for the year. Some of the past honorees include: Henry and Carline Lehnhoff, Luther and Dorothy Sagebiel, Kermit and Carolyn Westerholm, Dr. A.G. Wiederaenders, Carl Vann, Lana Urbanek, Pastor Greg Ronning, and Dr. Preston Reeves.
