New Commuter Option, Discounts for TLU Summer Scholars Academy
April 15, 2014
The Texas Lutheran University (TLU) Summer Scholars Academy (SSA) announces a new commuter option to its formerly resident-only two-week summer program. A batch of discounts based on application deadlines and social media activities and interaction have been implemented for SSA 2014. The academy for high school students who have completed their freshman year will take place July 13-25 on the TLU campus.
TLU continues to make higher education more accessible and affordable with this year’s new commuter option, which allows students within a 25-mile radius of campus to commute rather than reside on campus during the academy. Last year, the program changed its name from Lone Star Scholars Academy and lowered the tuition cost to allow for more students to get the high quality college experience attendees have come to expect.
“We wanted to open up this experience to more students who are interested in getting a head start on their college education,” said Tom Oliver, TLU vice president for enrollment services. “We believe the value of a college education goes beyond the price tag and that shouldn’t be a deterrent for any student who wants to pursue it.”
Discounts for meeting application deadlines and participating in social media activities will be available to offset the cost of the application deposit, making the academy even more affordable.
Meeting the Early application deadline on Feb. 1 gets $25 off the application deposit; Preferred application deadline on March 15 gets $15 off; Regular application deadline on May 1 gets $10 off; Late application deadline is June 5; Final balance is due July 1. A new online application form and payment options are available at www.tlu.edu/ssa. The two-week academy is $1400 for resident scholars and $950 for commuter scholars, which includes the $100 application deposit. Need-based financial aid is available.
Inviting, posting, tweeting, sharing and following on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest or LinkedIn can also earn up to $5 off the application deposit. A list of activities that can earn the discount is available on www.tlu.edu/ssa.
Alumni can also get a free t-shirt for referring students to SSA when that student attends. Details are available at www.tlu.edu/ssa.
A new course for 2014 will focus on math and problem-solving skills by immersing students in discussion to arrive at a solution. Morning and afternoon class offerings allow for more students to get into their first choice courses. Morning classes include: DNA discovery, Windows Live Movie Maker skills, American Sign Language and deaf culture and hands-on psychology to boost brainpower. Afternoon classes include: social effects and psychology behind mobile-based games and RPGs, college composition writing, math and problem-solving immersion, and printmaking of comics to graffiti to painting.
SSA is a two-week program that offers university-level courses for transferable college credit to academically gifted high school students. Each SSA student participates in two courses taught by select TLU faculty. Small classes, field trips, evening activities and a group service project offer high school students an opportunity to experience college life first-hand.
