Additions and improvements to Texas Lutheran University athletic facilities will bring exciting change to the campus in spring and fall 2014. A new athletics complex, including a football and track stadium, a new softball field, updated concessions and light installation at the Katt-Isbel Baseball Field, are among the Phase 1 improvements listed on the university’s current master plan.

These updated facilities, TLU President Dr. Stuart Dorsey said, are a major leap forward, showing the commitment to bringing game day experiences to TLU.

“Next fall, for the first time in 75 years, a Bulldog football game will be played on campus,” Dorsey said. “This project is about more than athletics. It’s about setting a bold vision and honoring commitments. TLU is committed to nationally competitive Division III athletics, and these facilities are needed to make that happen. We also have a vision for the quality of campus life. Our students have told us what they want to experience here: walking to games, tailgating and hearing the cheers reverberate all across campus. We want to tap into our students’ energy.”

The new football and track stadium, scheduled for completion in fall 2014, will be an NCAA compliant, eight-lane, 400-meter running track and field event facility. A synthetic surface football field, 500-seat east grandstand, 450-square-foot press box, stadium lights and concrete flatwork to support temporary bleachers and press box will also be part of the upcoming additions.

New softball stadium features will include a synthetic surface infield and outfield, stadium lights, batting cages, concrete flatwork to support bleachers and a press box. A 2,000-square-foot concession and ticket building will also be constructed between the baseball and softball fields, and The Katt-Isbel Baseball Field will receive stadium lights allowing for night games. Completion of the softball and baseball projects is set for spring 2014.

“The stadium will be not only a great venue for our Bulldog teams to practice and compete on, it will allow us to host occasional high school football games, track meets, marching band contests and other events that will bring visitors to campus,” Dorsey said. “Importantly, it establishes a campus home for both of those programs. Right now we have a nationally competitive women’s track and field team that has to travel around the region just to practice. Imagine how successful they’ll be with an outstanding facility right here on campus. It also allows us to launch a men’s track and field program, which I believe holds great potential.”

TLU Board of Regents Chair Robin Melvin said the board supports all opportunities for students to learn inside and outside of the classroom.

“This support for our Division III athletic teams will allow two of our sports, football and track, to compete on their own campus,” Melvin said. “We are committed to continually improving the living and learning experience for our students. The new freshmen residence—Centennial Hall—was the first step. This athletics stadium is the next step and we look forward to making future improvements to the fine arts facilities. The board is very proud of all TLU students and we look forward to seeing these new additions on campus.”
