Tina Stolhandske’s interest in health and wellness has landed her not one, but two successful careers. As a registered nurse at the Orthopedic Surgery Center and co-founder of River City Run—a 5K running tour through the heart of downtown San Antonio—Stolhandske’s dual professions promote healthy, happy lifestyles.

Although the nursing program at Texas Lutheran University was not yet established when she pursued the field in 2005, Stolhandske said the preparation she received at TLU was a perfect foundation.

“I attended TLU from 2003 until 2005 when I transferred to the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston,” Stolhandske said. “I had an absolutely wonderful time at TLU as both a student and a track and field and cross country athlete. I always knew the school had a respected biology program and I was well prepped when I left for nursing school. I’m pleased TLU students now have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in nursing. I know I would’ve stayed if this program were offered while I was there.”

While she advises students interested in nursing not to take the coursework lightly, she knows that hard work and dedication will pay off.

“Nursing school takes time and it’s challenging,” Stolhandske said. “But, there will always be a demand for nurses. It’s a very rewarding profession where you can impact the lives of people every day.”

Now, she and her husband, Bexar County Court at Law Judge Tommy Stolhandske ’05, have found another rewarding career at River City Run. In April 2012, as they were running the Freedom Trail Tour in Boston, they were inspired to create something similar in San Antonio to give locals and visitors alike the chance to connect with the city on foot.

“We knew that San Antonio, our home, is full of beautiful, historical buildings and Texas charm, and it would be the perfect site for a run of its own,” Tina said. “We began plotting out the spots on the way home from that trip to Boston and in June 2012, we launched. It’s an awesome way to share the city with others who enjoy an active lifestyle and want to learn about what they’re running past. We’ve met people from all over the world and tons of locals who have lived here their whole life and never been to many of the landmarks on our tour.”

Some of Tina’s favorite stops include The Menger Hotel, La Villita, The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum, and of course, the River Walk. Stolhandske was the River Walk Countess in 2014 and she and Tommy are members of the Paseo del Rio Association.

With the third anniversary of River City Run quickly approaching in June, Tina said they don’t plan on slowing down any time soon.

“We don’t see an end in sight,” Stolhandske said. “This is a wonderful, active way to share San Antonio with others for many years to come.”
