Live to Inspire: Dr. Rachel Eidelman ’92
April 29, 2013
Although the number of female cardiologists has doubled within the past 10 years, the Journal of The American College of Cardiology reports women account for less than 20 percent of the nation’s heart doctors. Dr. Rachel Eidelman ’92 is one of those women.
As Director of the Center For Women’s Heart Care at Bethesda Heart Hospital in Boynton Beach, Fla., Dr. Eidelman says it was her professors at Texas Lutheran University who inspired her pursuit of cardiology.
“The professors I had at TLU always encouraged both men and women into healthcare professions,” she said. “Dr. Bill Squires [TLU professor of biology] was instrumental in helping and pushing me to continue. Many males I met in my post-undergrad career advised me to steer away from cardiology. Dr. Squires encouraged me to pursue it. I don’t think I would have gone into the field if it weren’t for my time at TLU.”
After receiving her bachelor’s in biology from TLU, she received her M.D. from the University of Texas at Galveston, and then completed an internal medicine residency at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Conn. She then finished a one-year clinical research fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Fla. Dr. Eidelman practices mainly noninvasive and preventative care. Currently, she is one of three female cardiologists in Palm Beach County.
“Cardiology is tough for women to be in because it’s an immediate response field,” she said. “It’s hard to have a family when you’re on call 24 hours a day, potentially dealing with heart attacks. Luckily my husband, who is also a medical professional, understands and we have a wonderful support group of friends and colleagues who understand as well.”
Dr. Eidelman fears she would have been lost in the crowd had she attended a larger university as opposed to TLU.
“The environment and special attention you get from instructors is amazing,” she said. “You get personalized attention and encouragement from your teachers. They really work with you to help you discover what you love and how to follow the right path.”
