Deborah Martin, arts writer and theatre critic from the San Antonio Express-News visited with Introduction to Dramatic Media 123 students today, offering insight into the world of journalism and criticism. After reading about criticism in their textbooks, students had several questions about the changing face of journalism and the approach critics take when reviewing works, so Shannon Ivey, dramatic media assistant professor, asked Martin if she would be willing to speak to the students about her experience. Armed with questions, they interviewed Martin about how she started writing reviews, how she determines the quality of a show and takes notes and how much audience reaction comes into play. She spoke about dealing with retaliation for unflattering reviews and how she preserves relationships with those she critiques. Her advice, passed down from an editor, was to be specific and be brave—and if you find yourself chuckling at your own genius, you probably should leave that out. The Introduction to Dramatic Media 123 classes this semester are taught by Ivey and Terry Price, associate professor of dramatic media.
