David Feherty joins Verne Lundquist for Front Row on April 4 in San Antonio
January 23, 2013
Verne Lundquist '62 is no stranger to the spotlight. In addition to being a Texas Lutheran University alum, he is a popular CBS sports play-by-play announcer and former voice of the Dallas Cowboys. For the past ten years, Lundquist has taken time away from his busy schedule to host a very special event for TLU. Front Row, the university’s annual athletics fundraiser, is an evening where he sits down and talks with an esteemed sports figure for a night of entertaining conversation. This year, which also happens to mark the 10th anniversary of Front Row, is even more special for him. On April 4, 2013 Lundquist will sit down with longtime friend, retired golf pro and fellow CBS commentator David Feherty.
Lundquist looks forward to Front Row each year for the chance to interact with alumni and visit his home state.
“I really love seeing people I went to school with and socializing with everyone there,” he said. “I also enjoy getting that one-on-one reaction from an audience when I’m interviewing my guest. I don’t get that with my job commentating. It’s the difference between an actor in a movie and an actor on stage. I get to hear and see the emotion of an audience and feed off their energy. It’s great.”
As for this year’s guest of honor, Lundquist said while Feherty is definitely an outspoken, more colorful individual, he is also one of the most naturally funny people he knows.
“He’ll make for lively entertainment and I’m going to do my best to keep him on the straight and narrow, but I’m still telling those who attend to come with an open mind,” he joked. “We first met in 1990 and have spent the last ten years working together on the Masters in Augusta. For the Masters Tournament, they put all the television commentators in private houses on the golf course and David and I have been roommates for a decade. Throughout the years, we’ve developed a friendship and I can say he is truly a very warm, engaging and intelligent man with diverse interests. David loves classical music and opera. As a native Irishman, he recently became an American citizen and is very passionate about the men and women of our military, especially the Wounded Warriors organization.”
Lundquist not only looks forward to sitting down with an old friend, he’s happy Front Row will, for the first time, take place in San Antonio.
“San Antonio is a great place and a great golf community,” he said. “I actually saw my first tournament in the city when I was a student at TLU. I got to see Arnold Palmer win at Oak Hills and since that moment, I’ve been hooked on the game.”
Over the years, Lundquist has hosted Front Row with a variety of guests from Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman to Scott Hamilton and now David Feherty. And every time, he said, he’s been so thankful for the opportunity.
“I want everyone at TLU to know how much being a part of this event has meant to my wife Nancy and me,” he said. “Not only do I get to socialize with former classmates and meet new friends, it’s a special night for alumni to give back to the school we love.”
