Bulldog Investment Company Places 3rd at 2014 Texas Investment Portfolio Symposium
February 19, 2014
The student managed Bulldog Investment Company team from Texas Lutheran University placed third at the 2014 Texas Investment Portfolio Symposium at Southern Methodist University's Cox School of Business on February 15, beating out MBA teams from Rice, SMU and TCU. Led by Arthur Munoz, Ernie Stephenson, Kelli Gohmert and Jacob Bravo, the TLU team took home high honors after competing against 44 other universities from Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Latin America. Judges evaluated participants based on their perceptions about which team's investment process would produce the best results over time.
TLU's own Bulldog Investment Challenge, held this year on January 31, is an annual competition where students present investment research and their case as to why their company best complies with the investment methodology used by billionaire investor Warren Buffett. The winning presentation is funded with $5,000 into the student-managed portfolio, and students also have the opportunity to earn a piece of $10,000 in scholarship funds. The team pitching IBM won the competition. TLU Vice President of Finance and Administration Andrew Nelson was a judge at this year’s challenge.
“From my perspective, the Bulldog Investment Company internship program gives students an opportunity to practice critical thinking, provides in-depth experience managing real money, creates a venue for students to develop public speaking and presentation skills and gives students access to a variety of investment and business professionals willing to share their knowledge and experience,” Nelson said. “The skills developed in this program can be used in any professional setting, not just investment management, and I think the program gives the participants a valuable ‘head start’ as they transition from college to a career. I’m continually impressed by the work done by the students in Bulldog Investment Company, and I see it as one of the ways TLU students are able to learn boldly and live to inspire.”
