How to Give to TLU

Donors should carefully consider all aspects of making a gift before donating and are strongly advised to consult with a trusted tax professional, financial planner or attorney before finalizing gift arrangements with the University. The types of gifts listed below are detailed in depth in TLU's gift acceptance policy.

Gifts of Cash, Checks, Credit Cards

Outright gifts of cash, by check or credit card, are the easiest gifts to make. They are also tax deductible in the year given. TLU also gratefully accepts pledges – gifts that are paid over time. You can make a pledge commitment and set up a payment schedule that works best for you.

To make a gift by credit card or e-check, you can give now using our secure online giving payment solution.

Pledges and cash gifts made by check (payable to Texas Lutheran University) should be mailed with your pledge/gift form to:

If you wish your gift to be used in a certain way, be sure to indicate your preference both on the check and in a cover letter or by using our standard pledge/gift form.

Gift of Securities

Giving stocks and bonds that have increased in value (and that you have owned for more than one year) provides even greater tax benefits than giving cash.

Not only is the market value of the securities deductible (subject to applicable limitations), but you also avoid paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation.

The value of the securities gift is the median of the high and low market price of the stock or bond on the date of your gift. If your stock is held in custody with a brokerage firm or bank trust department, you can make a direct transfer of the securities from the custodian firm or bank to Texas Lutheran University’s account.

Use our securities transfer instructions form to assist you in the process.

For more information on making any other gifts to Texas Lutheran University please feel free to consult TLU's gift acceptance policy or contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office.
